Grammar (Nonsuch/Wallington Girls) for Humanities/Languages (not STEM)

Hi, I am asking on behalf of my friend who is not on mumsnet. She has a DD in Year 4 and is thinking of moving to Sutton for secondary schools. At the moment she is planning to rent close to Glenthorne or Cheam High, but she is also considering Nonsuch and Wallington Girls for her DD.

Her question is - are grammar schools good for a child whose main interest is languages and humanities? Her DD is bright (top of the class level) and does well in maths and science, but is not really interested in stem, and is very into English (creative writing), languages and humanities. Will she find her place in a grammar school? Everyone keeps saying the grammars are great for stem kids, but what about humanities?

Not Nonsuch or Wallington but was looking at this for our y5 DS. Sutton grammar show their a level numbers and hardly any do humanities/English/languages - they mainly do sciences - I imagine the girls grammars will be the same

Wallington Girls is more arts/humanities driven than Nonsuch or Tiffin Girls.

Of course she can find her place in a grammar school - the top scorers are very able in both maths and creative writing. STEM subjects are popular at A-level (often due to being required for certain career paths that are considered desirable), but those that choose English and humanities do well too. Recommend she look at the results and prospectus.

At Nonsuch they get the opportunity to study two modern European languages and Latin. If they carry on with Latin they get a chance to do Ancient Greek too. By state school standard that’s pretty good. Apparently one to Cambridge for classics most years. Don’t know so much about humanities but they offer a wide curriculum to bright girls so assume some must not be stem types. They also offer photography as well as art and their DT looks good. Have also heard Wallington is more humanities oriented but don’t know how true that is.

Thank you very much everyone, really helpful!

I'd heard that about Wallington and humanities too, but having looked at the results, Nonsuch's are better.

My DD is at Wallington girls doing GCSEs. She is not keen on STEM and is more of an English & humanities person. The school are supportive, she has good teachers in these subjects and she loves it. Being a grammar they have good focus on all subjects but STEM subjects seem to be more popular with the girls. In some ways it's easier for her to shine in her subjects Grin
