Degree Apprenticeships

I am enrolled on a Degree Apprenticeship.

Does anyone know where I stand in terms of leaving my company BEFORE having the end point assessment ie. If I complete my degree then hand in my notice?

I'm aware that I obviously won't get my 'apprenticeship' qualification but am I correct in assuming I will still get the degree from the university?

I think you would have to complete the whole thing - can you ask the training provider. How long do you have to go?

CantChooseANameAgain · 22/01/2022 11:04

I asked this having just completed the degree but not EPA.
I was told that the course provider wouldn't receive the funding and they could seek it from you / employer.
I do know someone who transferred theirs to their next employer midway.

It depends...are the company paying your university fees??

titchy · 22/01/2022 11:09

I doubt the uni's ts and cs means they can claim the 20% completion from the student. Doubtful they could claim from employer either tbh - they just have to suck up the loss.

There's no reason you shouldn't get your degree certificate though. You could always ask them if unsure.

It's an apprenticeship - the levy pays the fees.
myhousebuild · 22/01/2022 11:12

@titchy I'm not in the U.K. so I don't know what you mean but my degree apprenticeship is 3 days in work and two in university. My workplace pay my fees and a wage. If I opt out of work then I can't complete the course and if I don't complete the course then they can claim the fees back from me essentially.

Is it not an integrated degree apprenticeship OP? The EPA should be part of the degree.

If not integrated then yes you can leave before hand. The consequence is that your He institution won't get their final 20% funding, which is why the degree achievement is usually scheduled for after the EPA.

Do you need the apprenticeship qualification to get any professional accreditation?

snufflebuns · 22/01/2022 11:32

Thanks for the responses - I have 18months left but don't need the 'apprenticeship' part of the degree and won't need it for any professional accreditation. When I started the degree it was direct entry funded by work but after year two was 're-negged' into the apprenticeship by work hence my reluctance to finish it

I actually don't know whether it's integrated or not so will have to look into that..

I also read that no company can re claim fees from apprenticeships as it's classed as training ..

Not sure how true that is though

It's a minefield really and whilst I don't want to leave anymore je in the lurch, if I complete my degree studies at the university I don't understand why I can't just get the cert and go

It's a different system here. Employers don't pay unis directly. They pay a ring fenced tax, and unis then draw upon that funding from the Gov.

RomainingCalm · 22/01/2022 12:00

I would check with the university directly. It's not an unusual situation as the work for the EPA can be more arduous than the degree. Sometimes there is an option to 'buy yourself out' of the apprenticeship element.

I believe some universities won't issue the degree certificate until the apprenticeship is completed as it obviously affects their funding if learners don't complete (and brings down their completion stats). I've heard of universities that won't issue the degree if there are monies outstanding to the university and they would include apprenticeship levy funding in this but I don't know whether that's correct.

Some have changed their course structure so learners can't complete the degree qualification until after the EPA as often it's the degree qualification that is more attractive than the apprenticeship.

romainingcalm

yes - it's exactly this that's making me nervous, on top of a challenging FT role...

I will broach the subject with the university..
