Guildford schools

Hi all- looking for advice to Guildford schools and I know this topic has been done before. Looking at Cats, GHS and Tormead for 2 daughters who will be trying for year 3 and year 7 next year!
Heard great things about all- attracted by the idea of possible scholarships at Year 3 for Tormead according to the website- any advice on this school or the admissions? Also seen that GHS tend to be difficult scholarship wise. My eldest daughter is a violinist and fairly academic but may not be 'scholarship' material. However she really wants to aim for one but i don't want her to be let down. Any advice on either school for Year 7 and 3 scholarships at all or entrance exams? We like the idea of Cats in the country side and are totally confused! Will be moving from another area and looking forward to living somewhere 'prettier'!
Thanks.

@Firenze12 i dont actually know. Was just surprised by the cut

AroundGuildford · 05/02/2022 15:27

Hi, I went to the Tormead open day. There was talk about the modern languages, I believe they can chose 2 of the 3 (Spanish, French, German) and spend more time on each to help progress their learning. We saw it as a good thing.
Urn field was rejected as others said, but they still do sport there, just without the floodlights and all weather pitch they wanted to build. We were impressed and feel they are pretty progressive. Still stressed about the decision and probably over thinking it!

AroundGuildford · 05/02/2022 15:29

(They still do Latin etc) just spending more time on 2 modern languages rather than 3)

PricePoint · 05/02/2022 15:43

@AroundGuildford thank you for setting my information straight. Was a bit of a confusing message.

Firenze12 · 05/02/2022 16:14

Ah thank you so much! I was concerned they were only teaching two languages, which is what some less academic schools do. I'm a languages teacher and I think doing two languages plus Latin etc. Is better than doing more as it could be confusing! Thanks for clearing that up!!

PricePoint · 05/02/2022 16:35

@AroundGuildford the decision making part of it is really hard. Having choices almost makes it worse!! Getting the correct information is the tricky part.

GHS said no to a revisit to us but have allowed someone else we know to go - which really annoyed us at first - but its just another part of the process.

We liked Tormead alot but for me the Head is not my cup of tea - again a personal feeling of him trying to hard to push other schools down rather than promote his school more. I did love the positivity from the current girls and teachers.

St Cats was really warm and welcoming and reminded me of my school in its traditional aspect.

And we are waiting for one school result before we make a final decision.

We are lucky. Really lucky that we have a choice. And right up until we had the 1st offer we were so stressed and anxious and now we find ourselves picking holes in all the schools trying to make the right choices for our DD. Looking back and stepping away its little things that are swaying us and then someone else says something else that makes us think again.

I know what the best school is academically, i know which has the best grounds, which has the best art department, the best science labs, the best theatre (all different schools by the way) BUT i dont know which is right for my DD. However, we do have a choice and this stage that is almost priceless.

AGHSMum · 05/02/2022 17:45

@PricePoint, well done to your DD! I have 2 DDs currently happily at GHS. Do PM me if you have specific questions about GHS.

AroundGuildford · 05/02/2022 17:59

Ha @PricePoint - you are spot on! We find ourselves looking for reasons not to like the schools and it is tricky. The fact that it is such a difficult decision suggests whichever we choose we will be fine - again we are so fortunate to have these great schools as options. I woke up today thinking Tormead, will see if we change our mind by tomorrow !!

Oh that's strange. We are going back to GHS next week. I went to re-book onto an open day to see it again and they contacted me to say it wasn't appropriate as it's geared to 2023 entry. Did they say why you couldn't revisit?

PricePoint · 05/02/2022 19:51

@ReallyDontHaveAClue they said the girls have had a good look around and didnt think they needed to see it again. Which to be honest i thought was strange as its perhaps not just the girls that need to see the whole school !

Cyclingisfun · 05/02/2022 19:59

The language change at Tormead is welcome to us, my wife is a state school teacher and despairs that even they offer three lanuages, it's nuts. The kids (like most other schools) can still can choose two from three languages, plus Latin etc., which means they actually get good at two languages instead of average at three. It also means the girls get extra art, textiles, etc. In those freed up lessons.

The urnfield was rejected due to the static floodlights, however I was also intrigued, so at the social part of the offer evening I spoke to them about it and was reassured that the urnfield already had some floodlights, which they will continue to use, plus it doesn't stop them building any of the new all weather pitches and using the mobile floodlights. So they will look to go ahead with that, whilst appealing at the same time. With that, the on site and surrey sports park, it's not really an issue for us. I guess it depends what you're after, which for my daughter is definitely netball, rowing and tennis. It's courses for horses.

I've been to all the events where the new head has spoken, didn't find him putting down any other schools, so I'm curious where that comes from for you? In fact at the recent offer holder evening he actually said that other schools will be different to tormead and will appeal to you more, and as parents/students you must always pick the right fit for your daughter.

That all being said, why I really logged on tonight was to share something quite shocking..... that really caught us by surprise! So, on accepting a tormead place for DD this week, we then politely called to reject another offer (with scholarship) so that they could give it to someone else. The admissions lady, at said school, then told by us that Tormead was struggling financially and to be careful, which got us really worried, as prospective parents....! Well, when I then checked out the charity commission website, after calling tormead, it seems tormead have an average annual surplus of £800k and £6m+ cash in the bank... conversely, on checking, the other school, who told me this, seemingly it has almost no annual surplus and no cash reserves... it's really quite a (very) naughty thing to say! Has it got this bad?!

That sort of strange marketing/desperation sort-of brings me onto this year's overall oddity, which has nothing to to with Tormead, but is really quite a general reflection on our 11+ family journey. When my eldest went through this 4-5 years ago the process was emotional but less intense.... A lot of parents this year, my daughter's friends included, have been sold this bizarre 'warm, friendly and fuzzy, arty and creative' vibe, which will ensure 'your daughter thrives in creative environment'...for a start why have we started selling 'creative arts' as an easy, warm and fuzzy pathway, and, have I gone mad or does everyone seem paranoid that their daughters must be comfortable, hugged and happy and that's about it? It's like we've become, dare I day, 'snow flakes' for them. A couple of my daughters mates are oustandingly clever, but their parents are petrified of GHS, Tormead and StCats, because they are worried they might not cope academically.

It's just odd.

Not that my advise does, or should, count for anything, it would, however, be that any one of the schools above would be great.... so don't sell out your daughter's academically, they will all look after your kid, just get the biggest bang for your buck at the right academic level for your daughter. I can ensure you, she doesn't need just warm and fuzzy by default, these girls should be our future leaders.

TOGA1 · 05/02/2022 20:07

I find these discussions about Tormead really interesting. I currently have a DC awaiting outcomes for 11 plus SW London but am an old Tormead girl myself.

There seem to be so many threads about the academic level and it being 'on the up'. I finished A levels in the mid 90's so definitely out of date, but even then it was considered second to GHS.

Of the 25 of us who stayed for 6th form, there were 4 medics,2 vets, 5 to Oxbridge, 1 to Central Saint Martin, 3 who own their own business and 2 who are senior partners in big law firms.

Quite a few who joined at 11 plus also passed GHS exam but chose Tormead.

Just because it isn't GHS doesn't mean the girls don'e achieve and become successful. hello

@Cyclingisfun, sorry I've been monitoring this thread, as this time of year is always quite a fun time, especially on MN! I have to say I totally agree with your last point, last week a friend who's DD is on the 11+ circuit was going to pick a school way below the academic levels of his daughter, just because they wanted her to be 'happy'. Luckily DD has all her marbles and is, thankfully, deliberating between Surburton and Tormead.

On the cash-shaming front, that is hilarious! You must tell us all who the offending institution was! How low can you go?

On the Tormead Head, it's a shame @PricePoint you don't find him your cup of tea, but respect your view. I know internally, second hand, that he is popular and is making some long awaited changes, whilst investing in the current (and I guess by default, future) students daily lives/facilities. I have a friend who's DD is in Year 11, and she is staying now they've listened to the girls and have made positive changes to the sixth form provision, alongside the new Sixth form area. I hear all the science labs are being redone over the summer too?

That being said, I would recommend any of the three Guildford schools, GHS, Tormead, StCats. They've all been around for a very long time and they each have their own USP in the local market, they also all get great results to support a DDs future aspirations, you just have to choose from what you've been dealt.

PricePoint · 05/02/2022 20:24

@TOGA1 you are 100% correct. I have always thought an A student at GHS is A student at Tormead... why wouldnt they be ???

We have not decided which to go for and anyones opinion is very welcome as it clarifies some mistruths and facts. I welcome being corrected or given more information as it gives me more to think about and choose from.

I look beyond the league tables and scholarships and try and see if my DD will be happy and thrive. Thats the only important thing to me. The rest as they say is fluffy clouds Smile

WaterBottle123 · 05/02/2022 20:34

Absolutely no need to go private in Guildford! Our state provision is excellent and it's hard enough bringing up kids to be relatively normal in such a privileged town without adding private school into the mix!

surreygoldfish · 05/02/2022 20:39

They’re all very good but very different schools so it’s very much down to which one would suit your DD best… particularly if able enough academically to be offered all. DD at Tormead and we’re very happy with it. We know girls at all the other schools and equally happy.

alidasi · 06/02/2022 14:27

Hi everyone, am new to the area and could well be moving into the Guildford area if we decide to take the offer. Could anyone advise on what area is good?

BigWoollyJumpers · 06/02/2022 14:57

Only if you are lucky enough to live in the very odd catchment areas. If you don't, then you don't have those good options.

I would say, and of course I would say, but as a mum of two DD's who have gone through two different private girls schools in Gford, their depth and breadth of experience and knowledge, far outweighs that of those at the local state schools. You do get a much broader education at these schools. By their very nature and budget, they are open longer, and have broader curriculums. I am also very pro girls schools which do seem to produce many more tech, science, engineering and general STEM grads then state schools.

Lanteglos · 06/02/2022 21:14

All year 7 girls at Tormead will do latin , then they can pick 2 of German, Spanish or French. The sports field planning decision will be appealed.

PricePoint · 10/02/2022 21:48

So how did everyone get on ? Good news for all i hope.

Its a tough thing this 11 plus. But it seems that all the DDs are not that fussed. More parent anxiety about it all

Cyclingisfun · 11/02/2022 00:33

We've accepted Tormead, DD was keen and so were we, so easy decision. Isn't GHS but ticks all our boxes for kindness, pastoral care, sport and most importantly, academics. Plus looks like they have a lot of new student focused stuff/investments in the pipeline, which I'm going to see during my DDs time there. Always a bonus as a fee payer!

Glad this is my last 11+ to be honest, some of the marketing has been tiring and endless... perfectly timed example, and nothing specifically against them, but just saw on another thread that Priors Field are having a offer holder event days before the Guildford area acceptance deadline. Talk about dragging it out! Give us all (and the girls) a break. Confused

Neverenoughflowers · 11/02/2022 00:43

I asked about this priors field event for a girl friend and her daughter. They aren't sure if they'll go or not in the end. It is very late in the day, most other schools had their events shortly after sending the offers out, which is pretty standard. Having it that close to the deadline seems a bit weird. Most non-accepted parents, like every year, will have probably made up their minds and are now just waiting for February payday before they accept or not. After Xmas & Jan, finding a deposit is always tricky! We've done it twice now and both times that's always been the case.

alidasi · 12/02/2022 09:17

Hi all, just wondering anyone going to GHS from New Malden/Kingston area?

StarfishDiver · 12/02/2022 12:13

We know lots of girls from esher, surbiton, Walton, Weybridge all going to GHS or Tormead. Those families apply to places like Surbiton, Notre Dame, Claremont, LEH, Wimbledon too but lots opt to come down to Guildford as it's so easy on the train. Big groups get the train together.
