Homeschooling then independent secondary schools?

Is it possible to get into too independent schools if I pull dc out of prep and home Ed? I will home Ed via an online school so hopefully will have at least some third party feedback to offer but obviously nowhere near as much as school.

Well it's possible as some schools sit their own entrance exams so if they pass those they would probably get in. But sounds like they would be attending online school not being home educated.

So does that not count as home Ed sorry for my ignorance, I am moving to a different country and want to stay on the British curriculum so my dc would be at home but attend online school because the country doesn't allow home Ed by parents only.

Home ed is where the parent teaches the child and can teach them anything they want. Online school the child is being taught by teachers and following a curriculum.

Academically it's obviously possible if he has been taught to the appropriate level to pass the exams.

I can't see it would have an impact if he was called to interview.

The issue would be that the secondary schools would not have a reference from his primary/prep school. And would probably want to know why he had left the prep school.....
(I know that you probably wouldn't mention the prep school, but I think application forms usually ask for the child's past schools, preps and secondaries do talk to each other, and it's possible that your DS may mention it at an interview - particularly if you tell him not too!).

Cross post

I would try ringing some of the schools that you might be interested in and asking what would happen in your situation.

Thanks. I'm fine with them mentioning the prep school but it's more practically if an independent senior would consider it a negative point if my dc was not in a physical school.

I didn't realise home Ed was limited to parents teaching their dc I thought it meant any dc being at home all day and schooling there, no offensive intended I'd love to teach my dc myself but unfortunately i have to prove to this government they are attending school or on a 3rd party schooling program only.

@Seeline thanks, if I phoned do you think they would report back to our prep that we are planning on leaving? All the schools I want dc to attend are heavily linked to the current prep with lots of dc being sent every year to the schools and I haven't 100% decided I'm moving but this all plays a part in my decision.

I am almost 100% but education comes first, if I can pull off not putting dc at a massive disadvantage I will leave though.!

You don't have to tell them the name of the prep school. You could ask a theoretical question - just say that you need to move countries for a while and how would they view an application from your son in a few years time if you followed this route.

It really depends on the school, a highly competitive school whose admissions dept isn't keen on online education (it isn't the same as home Ed so unlikely) might be negative towards your child but most schools are not oversubscribed.

We have friends who have done this with all of their children. They all gained places at top public schools. My only caveats is that (a) they are very bright kids anyway and come from a very academic/ intellectual approach; (b) there mum is a teacher and tutor and was absolutely passionate about and passionately committed to home schooling.
