My DD has suffered from anxiety in past but has really come into her own recently.
Sitting 11+ for these schools. Not a alpha girl, not sporty and has dypraxia/dylexia

What your thoughts and experiences?
She wants to try for the academic schools but.not sure right fit for her...

Thank you.
Interesting view point.
More academic means less pastoral..any LEH parents views?
I would hate that she is under pressure all the time...

I know a few girls very happy at Sutton High, including one with SEN who needs pastoral support and understanding. It is quite small, compared to the other two, and I get the impression it loses quite a few to some of the more academic schools for A levels.

Surbiton has a reputation as very sporty, so if she isn’t keen to participate then I don’t know how good a fit that would be.

@teejy , LEH choose dd that suit the school. As you know your dd has to get through the exam soon and if successful a tough interview in Jan and then wait for an offer in February. Luckily with Sutton High you should get your offer in mid December which takes the pressure off. Best of luck to your dd over the coming weeks.

Thanks all for help.
DD is at sutton High atm!
Guaranteed place for senior but it seems a little too relaxed for my liking...
She hasnt quite reached her potential in school. At home and with tutors- she is remarkable! Fantastic results and creativity.
Tutors and parents are shocked that she is average at school. She says that although she is happy there...it doesnt push her to be her best.
Her words so hence we looked elsewhere...

Hi bumping this thread up. We are in a similar situation. Any thoughts between Sutton high school and surbiton high school? We heard that Sutton is a very relaxed school which also ends up promoting mediocrity and some kids don't reach their potential. At the some time for us when we heard the heads of Surbiton talking we felt, they were more organized, structured and seemed more thought through in their approaches. Both DH and me come from a corporate background so for us schools that try to push kids to their potential is not a massive red flag. At the same time we loved the facilities at Sutton high school and also it is closer to us by at least 10-15 mins (15 min drive) compared to Surbiton (25 min drive). Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

SHS is an exceptional school and learning support is about as good as it gets academic but supportive and sport elite.

I don't agree that more academic means less pastoral. The pressure in very academic schools comes from having a lot of very able children together - who set their expectations on themselves accordingly - and often also due to successful parents who expect a lot from their kids (because that's how they live their lives themselves). My experience is that the academic schools try very hard to balance that pressure!

Have you considered GHS? It has a reputation for being scary which really isn't justified. Girls do need to be academic, but it works well for many very different girls: there's a very strong ethos of seeing the girls as individuals, and encouraging them to develop their individual strengths and interests.

Despite the school being very successful at sport - they have very strong sports teaching throughout - being sporty is far from necessary. The school often suggests different things to try: they're encouraging about everything!

edited after spotting that the OP was from years ago, and the poster who bumped it has different concerns!

If you are looking at senior school @workmumma then your DD will probably be making their own way to school. So trains/buses are more important than driving time.

If you're looking at junior school it's more important. Make sure to try the journey at peak times.
