A levels versus level 3 apprenticeship

My DS has come across a level 3 apprenticeship he is interested in.
He started sixth form in September and is studying for 3 A levels. At the moment he doesn't have any firm career plans.
I have said we will discuss it further at the weekend, but can anyone help with the advantages of A levels over apprenticeship and what we need to consider. Thanks

If he’s bright enough to do the A levels, stick with them. L3 apprentices are more aimed at practical jobs. With a levels he could go to uni or do a L6 apprenticeship.

A level 3 apprenticeship could also lead to a higher level apprenticeship though. A levels would be my recommendation but A levels aren't for everyone.

What A-levels is he doing, and what is the apprenticeship in?
I wouldn't say a-levels are necessarily better than an apprenticeship- they tend to be more practical and vocational, and give the benefit of experience alongside theory, so I think they are very important.
Really depends on his skills, interests and aptitude though.

Thanks everyone. He's not said he's unhappy with his A levels (psychology, business and economics).
The apprenticeship is in design, and he did media Btec which is where his interest comes from.
He got a distinction and a distinction * in his btecs and a couple of 7's and then 6's and a 5 for Gsce.
As he's not sure what he want to do I would like him to keep his options open, but I've realised I don't know much about apprenticeships!

If he doesn’t know what he wants to do yet it’s probably best to stick with the A Levels as they would keep more options open. If however, he does want a career in design I’d plump for the apprenticeship as his A Levels aren’t really going to help him there. He could always do a Foundation art course after A Levels though.

My husband had a career in design before doing a teaching qualification, though he did A levels, then a foundation art diploma, then a traditional 3d design degree. You will always have more opportunities with the traditional educational route, and I would certainly encourage that over an apprenticeship in that has a very narrow career path that often operates in a gig-economy and with very little room for advancement or pay. It's also important to note that my husband's dad also worked in design, and as technology changes and the younger generation is inevitably more tech savvy than the last, that you're very likely to be made redundant. Sadly, most people don't end up Philippe starck, a levels and uni provide many other options to fall back on.

He's seen an apprenticeship that he likes - doesn't mean he will be offered it though!
If he is regretting his A level choices would it be too late to switch to a level 3 Extended diploma in this field if that is where his interests lie?

What qualification does the apprenticeship lead to?

EeeByeGummieBear · 14/10/2021 14:26

Thanks everyone.
It's sounding like he would need to be 100% about a career in design before even considering the apprenticeship, as his options would be more open with A levels.
He's not regretting his A level choices, but I think he likes the idea of earning more than he can working around his studying.
It's an advanced apprenticeship, which leads to NVQ level three qualification.

If he (or anyone in a similar position) is seriously considering it find about what the specific qualification is. NVQs come in many shapes and sizes, to keep uni options open he'd need one that is 3 A level equivalent.

Many L3 apprenticeships quals are either not accredited, or if they are they are only 1 A level equivalent.

@honkytonkheroe

A level 3 apprenticeship could also lead to a higher level apprenticeship though. A levels would be my recommendation but A levels aren't for everyone.
It could- it’s one of the options at the company I work for- but not available everywhere sadly.
