Bullying worries

I'm very worried about my eight-year-old son.

He's always enjoyed school and did very well until this term when suddenly his work has gone backwards.

Now he's said his best friend has been stealing his lunch money and that another boy is tripping him up and giving him 'wedgies'. He's also been in trouble for 'pushing' the friend who he says stole from him.

I've asked the school to investigate but they say they couldn't get to the bottom of the missing the money and I've not had an answer about the physical bullying.

It seems to me that something is wrong, especially as his work is going downhill. But when I spoke to the head about his work she seemed keen to make excuses rather than solve the problem.

He's a very bright child and I'm worried that makes him an obvious target for bullies, yet the school does not appear to be taking this seriously. My son's also not interested in football and cars, prefers Dr Who and imaginative play, so he has a small circle of friends, mostly girls, only one boy.

I was a bright child at school and also bullied....am I the only one who understands?

no i understand completely ginnyweeze. Was myself bullied all through school, and now am very anxious about the whole school thing with all dc's. I would try and talk to him again and try and find out more. Definately go back to school and push for something to be done. It brings out the worst in me i'm afraid, I want to go in and grab the bully and tell them not so politely not to do it ( but of course you can't

I had similar problems with my son but fortunately a very sympathetic head dealt with the situation swiftly and firmly.

Get hold of a copy of your school's anti-bullying policy. It may be on the website? The other thing that will help is logging events so you have a written record. If the head isn't sympathetic your next stop is the governors.
