Please tell me how to make a Joseph costume given I can't sew and have NO creative talents?

Ds's first ever nativity play (he's four). Got a slip in his book bag today to say he's going to be Joseph. Which is lovely. But they want me to make a costume! I am not clever with my fingers at all. And haven't sewed beyond buttons since I was at school myself. And even then I was crap - took a whole term to make the waistband for an apron IIRC.

I could just go and buy a costume but money is a bit tight this Christmas already, dh's job is looking under threat and it's hardly something ds will wear again.

Any ideas/advice/tips, oh wise ones?

They are selling 'biblical costumes in Tescos for £6. Buy one and add multi coloured ribbons

Blandmum · 27/11/2007 18:28

Wrong bloody Joseph!

Buy one and forget the ribbons

Dressing gown and towel !

lol MB.

MB. Thank goodness 4yo ds does not have to memorise the coat of many colours - he's having enough of hard time with the bit about Mary and Joseph looking for a room!

Good tip re Tesco's though, will go there this weekend.

Buy a rainbow-striped fleecy blanket ( I got one for a couple of quid from haberdashery shop couple of yrears ago)

Fold in half, drape over ds. Cut hole for head - fleece does not fray so no need to hem.

Tie rope/curtain tieback around waist.

Pat self on back and sing "You look handsome, you look smart" to ds.

Wrong fecking Joseph again. Well other Joe even easier - use brown fleecy blanket and repeat as above.

Slouchy · 27/11/2007 20:15

Needs a different song though

trawl charity shops for duvet cover, or sheet in appropriate colour

ElasticAnimal · 27/11/2007 20:23

tea towel for head

Swedes2Turnips1 · 27/11/2007 20:23

edam - i have a gold coloured tunic you can borrow (it's been Joseph before!) - you could then add a rope belt (dressing gown belt?) and a stripey towel for a head-dress. Let me know if you want it.

edam · 27/11/2007 20:25

thank you for those top suggestions. I think I can just about manage cutting a hole in a fleecy blanket (great tip about not fraying). And sorry for confusion - but I did say it was a nativity play!

Swedes, that is a very kind offer. But seems a bit off to ask you to go to any trouble posting stuff etc. etc. etc. I don't suppose you are anywhere near North Herts, at all?

i know you said you would like to make it, but mothercare one is on sale

Swedes2Turnips1 · 27/11/2007 20:34

yes - we had already established we live in the same town.... you could pick it up? Or I might be able to drop it off. CAT me if you want to do that.

edam · 27/11/2007 20:40

Doh, I'd forgotten that! Will do, thank you very, very much.
