Maths at Scottish primary school - need a bit of detail.

My son is in P6. His teacher stayed for the first half term then left . Since then we have had 2 supply teachers and now have a permanent teacher found by the Local authority who looks about 12 . I want some detail about what a child about to sit their Level D Maths test should know. I know about the L+T Scotland web site but can't find what I'm looking for. He is also due to take his Level D Language test and I found everything he should be able to do for that on the Assessment is for Learning web site but nothing for Maths. Can anyone help with the Maths thing? I've only been in Scotland for a year so don't really understand the system yet.

Think I'll have to keep bumping so I get a Scottish MUM.

my child is at a scottish primary school but shes only in p1. not much use im afraid

culd you contact the council educatin dept? have you spoken to any other parents?

elliot3 · 26/11/2007 12:34

the school should very easily be able to provide you with this

figleaf · 26/11/2007 12:46

I asked elliot3 but I'm getting the "now now dont worry" thing. Truth is I'm not worries I just wanted to know what he should be learning so I can help. I did find an example paper on the Assessment is for learning web site but that only gives a snap shot IYSWIM.

I thought about the council nail polish but was afraid that it would sound like an official complaint.

I can't believe there isn't a list thing somwhere to be found. Perhaps if I keep bumping someone may know.

The school will have info on this as elliot3 says. I know the teachers generally do not allow the children to sit the tests until they are convinced that they will pass. I'm not sure there is anything that he will need to revise for it as such.

I have tried to find the info on the net (I have found it before) but can't find it at the moment. I will post a link if I find it.

Sherbert37 · 26/11/2007 12:49

It's not like the English system, far more laid back. There is no work to be done at home because they only put them in once they know they can pass. He'll have done all the work at school, I'm sure.

Sherbert37 · 26/11/2007 12:50

Cross posts with Mistymoo!

figleaf · 26/11/2007 12:59

Thanks all. I'd really like the link if you find it Mistymoo.

I like the Scottish system much better than the up-tight, test bound English one. I think it serves everyone better. I just want the info because I like to help.

This link should have the info you're looking for - www.ltscotland.org.uk/5to14/htmlunrevisedguidelines/Pages/maths/Main/contents.htm

PurpleFrog · 26/11/2007 13:12

The attainment targets for maths start here on the LTS site:

www.ltscotland.org.uk/5to14/htmlunrevisedguidelines/Pages/maths/Main/maths2022.htm

You have to hit "Next" a number of times to get them all.

AMumInScotland · 26/11/2007 13:13

You can also get to the ones for other subjects from www.ltscotland.org.uk/5to14/guidelines/index.asp - I found it helpful to know what my ds should be covering, and what order they tackle things in.

But as others have said, the advantage of the Scottish testing system is that the school decide when the child is ready for the test, instead of the other way round!

boabsmum · 26/11/2007 13:25

Just gatecrashing this thread to see if any Scottish mums want to join me in emailing MNHQ to get information on the Scottish education system included on the MN 'Big Issues' section - linked from the homepage?

Currently there's only English info on SATS, church schools, national curriculum etc etc.

Our existence is not even mentioned, let alone any information or advice.

I've been emailing MNHQ since 2003 about this (when ds was a few months old) - he's now in primary 1!! I've had a lot of replies promising changes, but it's never happened.

As this thread shows, some further info or help would occasionally be nice. Or even a nudge in the right direction.

The current MN page on "British" Primary Education is here:

www.mumsnet.com/bigissues/education.html

butterflymum · 26/11/2007 13:32

I'm sure info on Northern Ireland Education System would also be helpful for many.

figleaf · 26/11/2007 13:33

Thanks AMuminScotland. I'm embarrased to say I had looked at that page but not got passed all the blurb on how to teach. The Blue tables at the end are exactly what I wanted - thanks.

As a web site the 5 - 14 pages are quite difficult to navigate do you think?

figleaf · 26/11/2007 13:36

Boabs Mum I TOTALLY agree. The Special needs system is different here too. One of my boys has ASN as they call it here but we can't be the only ones who would need the info can we? there are nearly 6 million of us in Scotland after all.

OP posts:
figleaf · 26/11/2007 13:37

Forgot to say thanks Purplefrog too

boabsmum

Have sent email to MNHQ re a parallel Scottish and Northern Ireland page.

butterfly
(a Scottish mum in Northern Ireland!)

boabsmum · 26/11/2007 13:40

Hurrah!

Now it's time to show my ignorance butterflymum- I assumed the NI system was the same as the English one . All the more reason for more info!

boabsmum · 26/11/2007 13:41

('tis bobsmum btw, with a Glaswegian twist )

figleaf · 26/11/2007 13:41

I'll do that too butterfly. Is it very different in N.I?

OP posts:
figleaf · 26/11/2007 13:42

There is a cafe near us called FatBoabs. In my head I use an accent when I say it

OP posts:
AMumInScotland · 26/11/2007 13:43

I totally agree we need some extra info on the scottish system - I'll add my email to the other requests to MN Towers!

Figleaf - I do find the 5-14 pages very hard to navigate. In this case I knew it was there, but I've looked for things in the past in vain!

boabsmum · 26/11/2007 13:43
Grin
bobsmum · 26/11/2007 16:12

Just got an email back from MNHQ - they will discuss adding a Scottish education section in January.

figleaf · 27/11/2007 10:43

On the thread I started on the Site stuff section they said they'd do too but didn't say Jan. Perhaps they need to research/draft etc. We'll have to keep an eye out.
