Just read this - anyone know if there is truth in this or is just exaggerated by the Daily Mail. Was considering ASL for DC but really not sure .. racially segregated clubs?!

Have friends with children there. Saw the article and called one of them. All of it is apparently true and there is worse still to come out apparently.

There are many schools that are better value and have better values than ASL. Critical race theory solves nothing, makes many students and their parents unhappy, and enriches consultants with very little life experience in the non academic world.

It’s true to an extent. They use an American style of ‘AA’ and so encourage people of colour to set up their own groups and clubs . It’s no different to ‘Black Power’ types of societies at university. But the difference is kids from different races can’t always join as they’re actively discouraged; that part is the bit that’s the problem not the club itself.

Critical Race Theory teaches that racism is a social construct, and that institutions can be racist even in seemingly ‘colour blind’ policies. For example the NHS policy to not treat autoimmune problems appropriately is more likely to impact darker skinned women as they are most likely to suffer from autoimmune conditions. The NHS’ Skin Cancer guidance has actively encouraged the deaths of many darker skinned BAME people because their symptoms don’t fit the profile.

Even in areas like maternity the NHS treats the pain of black women less seriously than of white women, despite black women more likely to need intervention: this has resulted in race enquiries in places like Milton Keynes where for a long time only black and darker skinned women seemed to be dying in childbirth / losing babies.

This is a great starting point to educate yourself with the basics.

Thank you @Ozanji. I am familiar with Critical Race Theory as a concept but that link explained clearly the educational component.

They are important concepts to teach but, to me, not to 10 year olds. Unless the school is developing the curriculum with the input of a child psychologist / expert in child education, these are nuanced concepts that are best untangled at a more sophisticated level.

The author of the article even says “ For one thing, scholars say, much scholarship on CRT is written in academic language or published in journals not easily accessible to K-12 teachers.”

@Ozanj- CriticalRace Theory can’t be taught easily or well in private schools to under sixteens. It’s only created resentments and money wasted on assemblies, consultants, and scholarships given for the wrong reasons. Flaming liberalism is not the best basis for a humane and scientific education.
