September 2009......I think

PandaG · 20/11/2007 20:39

depends on the policy where you live. round here (Sheffiled) she would go Jan '10, but most places would go Sept '09 (Ithink)

Lazarou · 20/11/2007 20:40

Go to your local county council website and do a search, you will get more specific info.

cas73 · 20/11/2007 20:40

She will go to reception Sept 2009. If you are around london, she will go to nursery sept 2008, but I think some areas might take them a term early. Best place is to check your borough's website.

BettySpaghetti · 20/11/2007 20:40

Jan 2010 if the school has a January in-take

prettybird · 20/11/2007 20:42

Are you in England or Scotland? Scottish cut-off dates are different, and there is more flexiblity for genuine deferall.

bracingair · 20/11/2007 20:43

dd's school has a nursery which starts in sep. all the children turn 4 between 1 sep and 31 aug. for reception they turn 5. i think places are awarded first to children in the nursery, so check out the schools near you. I have even heard of a school having a 2 year nursery.

September 09!!!!

Noooooo, she would only just be four though?

She would start the academic year begining Set 09 , whether it be Sept, January 2010 or Easter will depend on your LEA.

My DS2 was 4 in the August and started school 4 weeks later in the Sept !

And before you ask if yout defer their star to primairy school for a year , if you did she would just go staright into Year1 in Sept 2010 and would have totally missed Reception year .

If you go the private route then it may be a differnt matter .

prettybird · 20/11/2007 21:31

That's what's pants about the English system CaptainUnderpants (excuse the pun!).

In Scotland if you defer, your child genuinely simply starts a year later and doesn't simply jump a year as happens in England.

ibroughtcake · 20/11/2007 22:17

So legally I don't actually have to send her until she is 5? If not doing home ed obv

Below from a website :

'Compulsory school age

In England and Wales, most local education authorities have a policy of accepting children into school at the beginning of the term during which the child becomes five. However, the child is not obliged to attend school until the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday. In Northern Ireland, a child who is four years old on or before 1 July in any year must start primary school on 1 September that year. '

If you did this as said previuosly your child would miss reception completely and go straight into Year 1 . ( Unless any specialmedical or special needs which is an entirely differnt matter )

prettybird · 20/11/2007 22:27

You don't even need to home ed her though - but she will still end join the older children when she does start school. Unless you move to Scotland, she will alwyas been amongst the youngest in the class.

BTW if you were in Scotland, the age criteria ranges from the March of the year they turn 5 (when they would start in the following August) through to the following February (ie the youngest the would be is 4.5), with the right of those children who turn 5 oafter Agurs to start the following year -when they would then the oldest in the year, rather than the youngest.

Smithagain · 21/11/2007 21:13

She will be in the same year as my DD2, born August 2005, who will have been four for a whole 3 weeks when she starts school!

The other thing you need to keep in mind is that you may have to apply for her school place in Autumn 2008 - when she will only just be three!!

FWIW, I felt the same as you when DD1 was two (she is also a summer baby), but she was waaaaay ready for school by the time she was four. Another year at home would have driven her nuts. I know that's not the case for everyone, but don't start making detailed plans to Home Ed just yet, unless that is something you regard as a long term life plan!

Thanks for the replies everyone

It just seems so young to be going to school, she is my pfb though so this may have something to do with it!
