My Daughter is 2.5 and is in the nursery department of a private school. She has quite delayed speach and I'm trying to get help for her at the moment. The teacher asked me the other day if a mum from the school could assess dd's language as part of her childminding course. She assured me that it would be confidential. I wondered if this means that the school are concerned, and will they act on it if she thinks dd's got a language problem.
Also will we be able to read what she's written?

You need to ask these questions to school.

what proofessional qualifications does this other Mum have eg is she a registered witjh HPC qualified Speech and language therapist (SALT)
check the HPC register by entering her name and select SALT as profession
"Look at HPC register page"

personally if i were you i would not allow someone (trained or not) to informally assess my child

any assessment must be properly conducted
informed parental consent obtained clear definable purpose of Ax
written material

ask GP to refer to child developmental clinic
i dont know if SALT professional ethics permit such informal adhoc arrangements.

a childminder is not a skilled trained SALT and unable to assess or comment on paeds language development . stay clear

It could be that she just needs to do an essay on child development and needs a child to use as a case study. It doesn't mean she is professionally assessing your dc. When I trained as a Teacher of the deaf I had to do an essay on children's linguistic development and had to observe children of different ages and abilities. (For which I had to ask parents permission for). I wouldn't have a problem with this so long as she didn't discuss it with anyone.

She should also get you to fill in a permission form and you should definitely be allowed to read her work. But as others on this thread have said- you can't take this as an official SALT assessment- she probably has some sort of developmental lists she has to use to check against dds current language. It won't be any form of official assessment- Only SALTs are allowed to use them (at least that's what the SALT I work with has told me- I know more than most about children's language but I wouldn't be allowed to do these official assesments.)

mummyloveslucy- stay clear of this.this woman is unregulated untrained and therefore unable to diagnose, treat, assess or plan intervention.

standardised assessment as said are only administered by SALT. they can interpret results, plan treatment

please request an assessment by a trained SLT professional

good luck

I've heared about salt assesments. How do I get one for my dd? I've tried the Health visitor who just said come back when she's 3 and the G.P said go to your health visitor. I don't mind paying for this assesment (I'd obviously rather not) but I feel somthing needs to be done, so that she dosn't fall behind so much that it'll be a struggle for her to catch up.
