Welsh Medium education?

I haven't used this board before but I am hoping that some of you may be able to give me some advice.

I am Hannah, mum to Thomas who is now 25 months old and we live in Swansea and as yet I haven't got his name down for a preschool.

Neither myself nor my husband are Welsh (moved from Yorkshire in Aug 05) but Thomas is so we are thinking about a Welsh Medium school, I have an appointment to see the head at the local welsh medium school next week to see about a placement. Do you think this is a good idea?

My concerns are that obviously we won't speak welsh at home. Will it make ds behind in English, reading and writing?

oh I don't know I am waffling now I am just unsure about what to do. If anyone has ANY advice I would really appreicate it.
Thanks in advance x

My dd went to a Welsh medium school for the first 2 years.. we then returned to england, changed schools and she was way behind in most things

She caught up quickly, but i regretted sending her to a welsh school.

Sorry I can't be more positive. Talk to as many people as you can. Good luck.

my dt's go to a bi-lingual school in mid-wales and are doing very well. They pick up language much easier whilst they are young and the upside of learning welsh is that french and latin are very easy to pick up because there are similarities.

If you send him to a fully welsh school he will struggle unless he has been taught welsh at home/nursery etc and without any welsh language at home he will find it hard.

bi-lingual schools are a good compromise imo!
