yes, it is a very good school. I have a friend who teaches there.
what did you want to know?

lapsedrunner · 10/11/2007 11:15

Wow, swift responses...I posted then went to bed (we are 1 hour ahead).

Just a general question at this stage. By way of explanation DH & I are both British but currently living in Austria. DS(5) has been brought up here so is a fluent German speaker. At some stage we will return to the UK and I would love to try and keep up his German (but not to the extent of going to the German School in London).

Only just discovered Culham as I start to research whether Primary schools ever teach German and if so how to find them! Also found comments about Culham possibly loosing it's EU support/status?

I went the European School in Luxembourg (same curriculum as Culham). What do you want to know?

Pickie · 10/11/2007 11:35

I think one criteria is that at least one parent needs to be foreign to enroll your child but this might have changed...

The rumours about loosing EU support have been going for well over 15 years now yes it could but on the other hand it can go on for another 15 years.

When Culham stopped with new intake of Dutchies some of the mums started a Dutch Saterday school in Oxford and that is where my DS goes, maybe there is something similar for German?

The normal criteria for a child to be able to attend a European School is for one parent to be an employee of one of the European institutions (or affiliated organisations). There are no fees for such children, who are normally guaranteed a place.

Thanks for all your replies, it certainly looks interesting, food for thought. FYI it would seem that as long as you are a EU national you can apply (assuming there are spaces):

"Pupils are admitted to the European Schools either as Category I (parents have a contract of employment with an EU Institution), Category II (where there is a special financing Agreement between the parents employer and the school), or Category III (all other pupils). Families of any nationality may apply for places, but priority is given to EU-nationals."

I have a friend with kids there - both parents British but wanted to keep them in German speaking education after return to UK

lapsedrunner - some (most) European Schools are fully subscribed with Category I children. But I seem to remember having seen a table somewhere that showed that this wasn't the case with Culham.

The table may have been in documents of my father's. Pretty sure it wasn't on the internet. But if I have a brainwave and can find it I'll post a link.
