Hi, we're looking at relocating back to Exeter. We lived there pre-DC but now have DS. We intend to have him in private/independent school the whole way through but it has been years since we've been in Exe so don't know the rep of them anymore. Maynard etc obviously out as he's a boy. Considering Exeter School/Exeter Cathedral. Not worried if it's selective. Would really appreciate recent views please?

If you are happy with selective then Colyton Grammar is incredible and gets the best academic results in area - sport and extra curricular also very good. Might be better to use a prep but plenty of bright children get in from state schools using tutors (cheaper!)

It's been some time since DS was at Exeter School, and he left because of distance, but it was an excellent school and we were disappointed that we had to move. I think the head has retired in the last year or two (replaced by the head of the junior school, so I'd ask for more up to date opinions.

You might want to google "south street" for drugs and antisocial behaviour before choosing Exeter Cathedral School. Teachers have had to move drunks from doorways before getting into classroom blocks, it's a huge safeguarding issue there.

Hello! I have 3 at Exeter School.

All three did nursery at Exeter Cathedral School but we moved them to our local state school for reception onwards for affordability reasons but also because we weren’t the biggest fans of Cathedral (lots are!). We then moved to Exeter School junior school from state a bit later (at 7+ and other ages) We LOVE the school. We have daughters and a son but chose mixed for all. The new head of senior senior isn’t actually the head of the junior school. The junior head, a woman, started two years ago and is amazing. The new head of senior, also a woman (that may be the confusion!) started a year ago and she’s also amazing. She’s the ex head of the St. Paul’s School in Brazil, so much more international than the school has had before.

Some people choose Exeter Cathedral School for being a chorister which of course is a fabulous life experience…

For pre prep it’s Exeter Cathedral School or the New School (just bought by Exeter School but it’s on a totally different site and the kids still need to do the Exeter School 7+ for entry), or the state schools in Exeter are really good for that age of you just do state until the 7+.

Kids from both Cathedral and Exeter do the 11 + for Colyton (although not many - maybe two or three each year at most, while quite a chunk of state school kids go for it - there’s not the private prep to 11+ for grammar route that seems to be normal elsewhere) which is indeed amazing for results, but a long bus journey and not for everyone. If you definitely want the private school experience for reasons other than results (Colyton results are great - better than private I think!), it’s not that private school experience. Lots of kids also go to Torquay boys / girls grammar.

Finally, a fair few kids from Exeter go out to Blundells, also fab - sometimes kids choose that who have not got into Exeter of Maynard, but it still does really well.

To be honest, we’re spoilt for pretty good schools, state and private!

Sorry to jump on an old post, but we are considering Exeter Junior School for down the line and curious about how much of an ordeal the admissions process is at the younger ages? Worried it could be a lot to put on kids who haven’t done much in the way of formal assessments before. Did your kids mind the experience? Sounds like they love the school though!

Have two children there and haven’t noticed this problem! Children very well looked after, staff are brilliant - such a wonderful school - mine are so happy there
