How do i approach ds teacher regarding streaming?

Ds was in higher sets for all areas including literacy at his old school. He did very well in sats all 3's except for handwriting as he daydreams. His handwriting is good and spelling is excellant. He gets bored easily however and needs prompting to write a substatial amount. His reading is fab and he is pretty much now an independent reader.

His new school (juniors) teacher has put him in upper average set for literacy as ds scored 2b for handwriting. Ds is getting bored as his spellings are very easy for him words like 'when' 'could' days of the week etc. Historically ds has always been very god with spellings and rarely gets one wrong. He is however almost repeating all he learnt last year.

How do i approach this as when i tried before the teacher said that he was tested at beginning of school year and couldnt spell these words (I am not sure about this tbh as words like 'will' 'what' 'when' are a walk in the park for him). He is starting to get bored and I am worried he has been pigeon holed and that is that.

Want to speak to her tonight but dont want to get her back up. She is very nice tho.

what happened FankAwen?

Spoke to his teacher. She was very nice, said that i wasnt in anyway trying to say how to do her job but explained that ds histyorically been in high set for literacy and the only issue he has is his concentration rather than ability which she agreed with. Initially she said they were changing spellings soon, I said that regardless I think he needs to go up a set as he is getting bored and therefore not being pushed to his potential. She seemed ok with this and hopefully she will address this. THey are also looking to assess him for a form of dyslexia which is also helpful.

I think that personally they simply looked at sats results and put them in groups according ot them. If she had spokmen to his previous teacher tho she would have been told despite a 2b he is able to easily achieve a 3.

I had a different experience from you (good to know some teachers are more aware!). I think DS was originally streamed by just his SAT results, too mostly 2bs/2as but he was soon moved to the top groups because his teacher spotted his current abilities were above what his SAT results suggested. Maybe his skills will now plateau, but I'd like him to be extended and not bored, too, when possible.

I gather that writing ability is a big factor for DS being in top literacy group, plenty of children can read as well as he can but not so many can string as many sentences together. I think writing is just plain a big deal in Yr3.

Sounds like you said the right things.

Ds was moved up a group in spellings (top of middle group). They were along the lines of 'grumble' 'simple' etc. He had a go at them and got them all correct first time again. Spoke to hus teacher again to thank her for reviewing his spellings. Explained again first time he got them all right. She said they are the hardest for his group, I asked then if he could try the next group then (different class/teacher for this) She said that they are looking ot assess him for dyslexia next week and that a meeting would then happen so it could be sorted then. His sentence formations etc is all very good. Basically he gets very very bored and his mind drifts. Funny thing is that he was in middle group for numeracy last year and because of sat results been put in higher group and is managing it.

I think my daughter was probably in bottom set in year 1 (she's August). At the beginning of year two she was on stage 3 in the reading scheme and her books were not stretching her at all. Then one day she came home with a stage one book and was very upset. I wrote a comment about this in her reading record, and the next day the teacher assessed her and moved her up to stage 5. Within two months she was off the reading scheme altogether. She did well in her SATS (2as in reading and maths, 2b writing). The y2 teacher moved her to the top set. It's an inner London primary that does not get any 3s so she was about right.

Now she has her Y1 teacher back again and she's been moved down to a set with children who got 2bs/2cs last year. I don't really know why but I'm not going to complain because I think being one of the brightest on her table with improve her self esteem. Plus there's another bright boy in her set for her to mark herself against.

At dd's school they are loosely put into 3 bands for spelling, but anyone is more than welcome to learn and be tested on the spellings for the next group up if they (or the parents!)want the challenge. Seems a good idea. Why keep them down if they WANT harder spellings? And then prove that they can cope?
