If you look on your local ambulance service website there should be some information on there.

Who have you emailed? You need a degree in paramedic science. Search that then look at entry quals. Access course in science would be your best bet I'd have thought.

You'll also need Maths and English GCSE.

I don't understand what you mean by "I also have my physiology and anatomy". What courses did you take in these subjects exactly - if it was a degree surely you would have taken biology A level? Or was it a more applied qualification? A level 3 applied qualification may be considered as equivalent to A level but any medical courses including paramedic are very competitive so you may need to take an Access course if you have no A levels.
Core + additional Science was the old Double Science GCSE. As said above you will also need grade C or above in English and Maths to be able to start an Access course.

@catndogslife I have maths an English grade b so that's not a problem. Going to ring carers advice today see if they can help me. I think il have to do an access corse. My anatomy and physiology is an nvq I did at college a few years back x

You'll likely need to do an entry course at college called Access to Nursing. It'll cover your basic Biology and smaller bits to get you into university. Local collages usually offer this, but there may be a fee. You can then apply for a Nursing degree then specialise in Paramedic Science or go straight in and apply for a Paramedic Science degree.

Do you have any Level 3 qualifications? A levels or Btecs? What level are your NVQs?

spidermomma · 25/11/2020 13:52

@latheritup oh brilliant thank you!!! Il have a look at the local college now
That's helped loads thank you

FE colleges are usually very good at assessing prior learning to find out how relevant unusual qualification are to the course you would like to take / your future career.
NVQs are usually work related and may help with the understanding of some parts of the course.
If you haven't studied for some time, an Access course is also a good idea to help you get back into studying. They will also provide lots of help with university applications etc

You need to have taken A levels, Btech, or access course in last 5 years. Most unis need 112-128 UCAS points. You need a minimum of 4 or 5 GCSE’s at grade 4 (c) and above. You need healthcare experience or experience which you can link to paramedicine so any people facing job. Once you have that you must write an excellent Personal statement and then..... you might have enough to get offered an interview. Most courses have an approx 600 applications for 40-60 places. once interviewed you keep everything crossed for an offer Smile

My fiancé is a paramedic and it's an extremely difficult job. He spends many hours away from his young son and I and the working conditions and pay are both truly appalling. It's mentally and physically draining and I never know when he's going to be home. The never-ending switch from day to night shifts is bad for his health. I'm sorry to be negative but please think really long and hard about your decision. If you do decide to go ahead then I really wish you all the best - it does have its positives and I'm very proud of my fiancé. I hope you don't mind me sharing my perspective Thanks

The biggest thing you need is life experience, preferably with some experience in caring.

The first job you go to could be the worst of your career, you have no way of controlling this and you have very little to fall back on, there will likely just be you and the 2 person crew you are with to deal with it.

You need to be mentally ready to handle this, or at least for it not to destroy your mental health for the rest of your life.

Worth considering either getting a job as a ambulance care assistant or a a&e health care assistant for bit.

Other than that, paramedic science is now a 3 year degree course. Look at the universities online prospectuses, they will tell you the entry requirements.

TheProvincialLady · 16/12/2020 22:32

You could join and train as a technician and then do further training to become a paramedic, if you found the work suited you. Here is what one ambulance service offers www.emas.nhs.uk/join-the-team/ambulance-service-roles/trainee-technician/

You won't be offered a place on a course without having a full driving licence.

Lots of unis don’t specify the requirement of a B1 driving licence whereas some - like Oxford Brookes like their prospective students to hold the C1 provisional
