Taking an additional 2 weeks 3 days off during xmas school holidays?

Dear fellow parents, my daughter is in P7 in an Edinburgh state school. what are your opinions of us leaving a week before the xmas holidays on 16th December and returning on 10th January 21? this is an additional 2 weeks 3 days off school during the period a week before the xmas holidays and the first week back from the xmas holidays. The teacher confirmed there wouldn't be much to miss during this period but said would contact the Edinburgh Council about it and ask for their advice as it is over 2 weeks. Thoughts?

Why? It’s not like you can go on holiday.

If it’s due to Covid fears then l’dsay yeah. It’s not like anyone is getting a normal education anyway.

I also wondered why. It’s not like you can go anywhere. My kids will be bored at home all holiday so better to go back to school.

You haven't said why you want to do this?

we plan to visit family abroad, and the place has a two week quarantine, so xmas holidays is 13 days. meaning we have no time with family. so extending holidays by 2 weeks 3 days would allow us about 8 days together. most important is, my daughter in p7 wouldnt fall back too much during this 1 week pre and post xmas holiday period right. so don't understand why teacher has contacted the council about this

I thought it was only essential travel?

Is that going to change out of lockdown?

FundamentallyFucked · 19/11/2020 14:32

Abroad? I think that's a bit ambitious tbh. We are not even allowed to leave our local authority area just now so the idea of going abroad in a few weeks, simply to visit people, seems a bit of a stretch.

I thought only essential travel was allowed.

We've just had one of those standard-generation letters about dropping below attendance targets, for a total of 5 days genuinely off sick since Sept. Don't know if similar targets exist in Scotland. Anyway, fine words are talked about how important attendance is.

As most schools have provision for kids to more or less keep up at home when isolating, can you make sure your DC does the online work set for the 2 weeks 3 days they won't be in?

I wouldn't have a problem with it. Mine will be off for a month anyhow. Visit your family and enjoy :)

Is there any quarantine requirement on returning to Scotland?

If you really want to do it, I think I'd take off 2 weeks before Christmas, so you can start the new term on time, rather than miss the start of the new terms topics.
