an independant school is a non state school, so you have to pay for your kids to go (unless they get a scholarship). Some state schools and some independant schools are selective - i.e. can choose their pupils, usually on acamedic or possibly musical merit.

Most areas DON'T have state grammar schools. If an area does have grammar schools, the exam is usually taken at 11.

Some state schools can be a bit selective, I think. For instance, church schools (usually Catholic) are selective, in that they choose on the basis of your faith. But they still have to take some who aren't of their faith.

It does get confusing. Generally, there are state schools - which are usually comprehensive (the vast majority) or grammar (mainly Kent and a few other counties have them).

But, I know that there are some state schools which have exams and are selective, even though they're not grammar. I think they can take a certain percentage of 'high achievers'. Best to look at the details for each school.

Sorry it's not straight forward!

We have 2 state schools in our area that select on aptitude for their specialism (one school technology and the languages). I think by law they are not allowed to take more than 10% of their intake this way.

My son got into his school on aptitude for technology and his friend has gone to another school on a aptitude for languages.
Aptitude doesn't mean you are good at a subject, just you have the potential to be good.
