Welbeck Defence College

DS is is an engineer through and through (like DH) and is considering a career in the RN. A friend mentioned Welbeck to me at the weekend, it looks great, but my concern is about the pastoral care.

The threads I've read on this are old but there is obviously a large drop out from the college and I know boarding is not for everyone. What are recent thoughts/experiences on it please?

Many thanks

It's closing at the end of this year, so it's most definitely a no go.

There was very little "drop out" rate though, however there were expulsions as standards were extremely high. The pastoral care was also excellent. It's an utter shame and a disgrace that it's closing 😔

It was a fabulous place - high standards, facilities and great prep for "proper" military service.

Such a shame it's shutting - just hope it is used for something else as special.

Oh no that is really sad. What a shame. It looked a perfect place for him. Out of interest do you know why it is closing - funding I suspect?

Looks like it is back to the drawing board then!

The government closed the scheme. Shortsighted to the extreme. Where do they think all the future engineers are going to come from?

Wellbeck did a wonderful job of opening U.K. opportunities to those bright children from not traditional backgrounds. All of that, gone.

My dd considered welbeck a few years ago as is also really interested in engineering and the navy. She didn’t feel ready to board at the time though.
She chose to do maths physics and chemistry a levels and is at uni studying maritime engineering, it was previously called ship science. Her uni has a URNU attached to it ( google will explain it much better than me) which she has joined and she is really loving it. She is almost certainly going to join the navy after her degree.

That is really useful thank you.
