Roughly how many days a year do your kids miss school through illness? (is there a time when school would question too much time off sick)?

Just wondered whats considered "average" for time of sick during a school year. Im guessing I must be very lucky because mine have only had 2 or 3 days of ill during a year (so far!), since they started school. However, my brothers kids always seem to be off. Ive always noticed on their school reports that each have around 15-17 days of ill a year. Their youngest who is 9 has only been to school twice during the past ten school days - although this time I know she has had a bad throaty coldy thing. Are some kids just more likely to get bugs than others. I can imagine have a bad year every so often but they seem to have a bad year every year. Am are being picky here or are they just unlucky.

i used to have 100% attendance until i had to have grommets!

I remember at school all the kids used to know which were the soft parents cus they would let you have a day off with not much wrong. I used to wish my mum was liek that but now im glad she wasnt!

My son had 2 days off last year in reception for being ill and missed a couple of hours of appointments for seeing the community paediatrian or ENT or audiology. We are lucky in that our hospital is really close so he only missed about 2 hours of school at the absolute most.

His school were nice in that the child could still get their attendence certificate if the the parents showed the school proof that the child was going to a medical appointment.

I'm lucky that my DD is very healthy (touch wood).

Last year she would have had 100% attendance if she hadn't gone and broken her arm in two places! Even then she only had 3 days off (mostly for inconveniently timed follow-up appointments at our [not very local] hospital).

I do think that some children are simply more illness-prone than others. Neighbour's children have loads of days off school - but are genuinely ill each time I should add.

DS1 had one day off last school year.

Well, I was right, I did jinx myself . DS had to have the last Monday of term off, and the Friday before that. Temperature and ear infection, typical. The rest of the brood have followed suit, but DD has it now so at least it's the holidays and she won't miss nursery (it's attached to the school). So DS is 2 days down on attendance already, and if the last two years are anything to go by, it won't be the last.
