Tiffin 6th Form (boys school) for a girl

farangatang · 26/08/2020 13:26

My daughter has been offered a place at Tiffin for 6th Form (her GCSE results were good enough to get her off the wait list). She is reluctant to leave her current school but the Tiffin 6th Form looks really great.

Any advice from current students or parents as to what it is like? She finds it hard to make decisions so it would really help to hear about the first hand experience of those who have attended (particularly girls).

Thank you.

I have also posted this is the Further Education thread - not sure which one gets the most 'traffic'!

Hi - I can't answer your question from first hand experience, but a friend-of-a-friend's daughter went there and loved it. My son has accepted an offer for this year but we only considered it on the basis that it would be mixed in Sixth Form - we don't like all-boys schools much. When we went for our interview we were told most of the new starters will be girls. We were also told that the sixth form teachers tend to work exclusively in the sixth form, so current students tend to be unknown to them and are all mixed up to the extent that new students blend in very quickly.

When my son sat the 11plus last Autumn I had a quick chat with some of the girls who showed us around and they all seemed very happy but I guess they'd only been there a few week as I think they were the first intake!?

Am considering Tiffin Boys for my daughter who wishes to change from the german school which is just above a third of the costs of English pvt school. She wants to do sciences. Any insights?

@Fluttermum Tiffin School is a wonderful opportunity. Go for it.

There are several maths groups in the sixth form. I think Dr Frost might teach one of them but he mostly teaches lower down the school.. The other maths teachers are obviously pretty good too though ... just not as famous Grin.

Just to update - she chose it and is really glad she did so!
@Fluttermum if you want to ask anything in particular to my daughter, just send a message and I'll pass your questions/your daughter's questions along.

So far I think the pastoral care seems pretty good and there is reasonably good communication between the school and home. Lots of independence is expected so far and this is taking my daughter a while to adjust to.

It's a big sixth form. I think they took in around 70 externals this year and around 60 of those were girls. It's obviously best for very bright and competitive kids. It seems a bit old fashioned in some respects - the dress code is more formal than many other sixth forms. Teaching seems good, lots of extra study encouraged, tests every half term.

The admissions criteria depend on predicted GCSE grades. Am I right in thinking the German School doesn't do GCSE's? If so, you might need to check how your daughter's application would be dealt with.

May I ask about the entry exams , how did she practice for them ? Were them similar to GCSE exams .
TIA

kuppateee · 21/12/2020 21:49

There aren't any entrance exams. They just use predicted GCSE grades. The sixth form admissions policy is on their website.

Londonmummy66 · 22/12/2020 00:25

I'd just caveat that if your dd goes to a school that won't do predicted grades - just currently working at - then she is at a huge disadvantage as Tiffin basically look at the grades and assume they are predicted and offer on that basis,. SO if DD is currently working at 10 grade 8s and likely to get 10 grade 9s she probably won't get a look in as she hasn't got 10 grade 9 predictions. Really unfair....

kuppateee · 22/12/2020 07:50

@Londonmummy66 I think they know not all schools do predicted grades the same way. That's why their policy says they use "our assessment" of your predicted grades, so there is room for manoeuvre. They ask for a reference from your child's current school and their most recent reports, including mock results, to build up the picture.

kuppateee · 22/12/2020 07:54

I guess over time they also build up a picture of which schools predict grades accurately and which ones don't.

@fluttermum.
Hello - hope you having a lovely day. My daughter has applied to the boys 6th form - waiting for response. In meantime, realise your daughter only had one term actually in school. Wondered how she found making new friends as coming from another school? Know each year different. It would be best part of an hour commuting each way so weighing up that to a local school. Hope your daughter back now and getting into routine. Mine has mocks starting next week - eek.
