Question to the teachers on here

DS17 will be going into Year 13 in September and whilst doing revision he wanted to ask his teacher to explain something to him as he couldn't find the answer online or in textbooks. He doesn't want to ask as he is worried about disrupting their summer holidayConfused
Would teachers mind replying to their students' emails during the summer holidays?
Just wanted to check before actually telling him to write one lol.

I wouldn't mind answering, but lots of teachers don't check their emails over the holidays.

Kitkat05 · 18/08/2020 20:12

I'm the only teacher in my school (out of 30 teachers) who replies during holidays.. :/

SweepTheHalls · 18/08/2020 20:14

Email away! They wont reply if they don't want to!I check my email about once a week in case any of my students need me. If you want though, ask our hive mind..... Bet one of us can help 😊

FrippEnos · 18/08/2020 20:24

Email them.

I check mine periodically. so you might get lucky.

JulesCobb · 18/08/2020 20:26

Before this summer, i have never checked my emails during summer. Or a weekend. Or an evening.

hedgehogger1 · 18/08/2020 20:26

Has he tried checking YouTube for his question too? Lots of subjects have really nice explanation videos online now

BuzzFeed773 · 18/08/2020 20:26

Not paid for the summer holiday, and not expected to answer work-related emails. May I suggest a tutor?

Reader1984 · 18/08/2020 20:27

I don't check my emails during the holidays.

LittleBearPad · 18/08/2020 20:27

I wouldn’t expect an answer - plus they’ll be back in 2 weeks.

JulesCobb · 18/08/2020 20:27

Send the email, but assume the probably wont check the email.

Or ask on here. You might get lucky.

uglyface · 18/08/2020 20:28

I’ve been replying to my class’ posts on Seesaw about their summer holidays, pets etc. Only once a week though, when the toddler is at nursery and I’m doing planning at home.

I’d send the message, but don’t expect a reply straight away.

Kidneybingo · 18/08/2020 20:31

What I keep telling myself us that after everything that has happened I'm having firmer boundaries. In reality I'd probably answer in less than a day. Certainly wouldn't be offended by it.

SailorGirl3 · 18/08/2020 20:32

I tend to check my emails twice a week in the holidays. I like to help out my pupils where possible and save them worrying about something, especially in the current situation. I know in my school around 50% of the staff check their emails regularly in the holidays.

silenceattheback · 18/08/2020 20:33

No harm in sending an email but don't expect a reply until September. You'll find lots of teachers will check emails and respond but this shouldn't be expected.

Make sure he is polite in the tone of his email and addresses the teacher appropriately and signs off with his name. If lockdown has taught me anything it is that modern ict lessons don't seem to teach email etiquette to students.

PurpleDaisies · 18/08/2020 20:34

Ask on here! Love a homework question...

I agree with everyone else, it’s fine to email but don’t expect an answer.

spreadyourwingsandfly1 · 18/08/2020 20:36

I would email but don't be offended if they don't respond. I'm currently abroad and wouldn't answer but would if I was at home.

redcarbluecar · 18/08/2020 20:38

Many teachers don’t check email over the hols- no reason why they should really; it’s a break. He could send it understanding that he may not get a reply before term starts.

xvioletx · 18/08/2020 20:52

I wouldn’t mind and would reply- although most my colleagues don’t check their emails during the holidays

Smellbellina · 18/08/2020 20:54

I do check my emails but don’t reply to all, I would reply to that one.

Shieldingending · 18/08/2020 20:55

Teacher here, make sure he is very polite and to understand that he may not get a reply- teacher could be on holiday! I’ve replied to a few emails from parents recently (teach in a special school). If they have concerns I would rather try to help reassure them than have them remain worried

Oldbagface · 18/08/2020 21:06

Why not ask here? Someone may know

Schmedz · 19/08/2020 09:33

I also check my school email about once a week, and am certainly not offended when students email with questions (and it's sometimes a nice surprise to see messages from those who just want to say hello or tell me about their holiday!!)

Not everyone does check (nor should they) so he shouldn't be upset if he doesn't get a reply. If it is urgent, support staff will still be working on the premises so might be able to forward a message, but it would have to be absolutely essential to know now and not in two weeks' time...

SaltyAndFresh · 19/08/2020 09:36

I don't check over the holidays because I'm not paid.

MrsHamlet · 19/08/2020 09:40

I told my students I'd check once a week. Some of them had work left from lockdown to complete, and I'd rather mark it now than have it pile up. But we're not obliged to check.

LolaSmiles · 28/08/2020 22:47

He could send an email to ask, but be aware that because staff are on holiday they may not reply. It may help to acknowledge that when he emails.

Personally, I check my emails every couple of weeks and would reply to a sixth former with a question.
