Primary teachers - what initial/baseline assessments are done in your school and when?

I haven't been teaching since 2001. At that time a "baseline assessment" was done for all nursery children to assess their skills/knowledge. I can't remember if this was done in the first term or not.

Can anyone tell me what happens now in schools?

Thanks

ds1 had his baseline assessment on his first day at school and we had parents evening in the second week to discuss it.She just told us that he had scored v.highly and she was going to be doing lots to challenge him and the other 'more able' children(boast!!!)

Children are assessed at the end of the Foundation Stage, ie the end of reception. There are a set of 'early learning goals' that most children should have acheived by then.
