as DS1 has got until next Thursday to "learn" them......but when I quickfire

"What are 2 8's" or "what's 10 x 4" he comes straight back with the answer.

I tried a few - "there are 4 children and they each have 2 sweets, how many sweets are there all together" type questions too.....but he answered those straight away also.

What other ways can we practice them so that they really become concreted??? I know that if he's totally sure of them next week then he'll more than likely be put in a "higher" group which will move onto 5x (and then if they master that 3,4,6 etc) - but I want to keep it "fresh" for him.

Sorry, I'm not quite following your question. If your ds can answer quickfire questions correctly, what is the problem? It sounds like you've nothing to worry about as he's ahead of the game!
If I were you, I'd continue asking him random practise questions every day to keep it all at the forefront of his mind.

no problem at all - I just wondered if there was another way to "practice" them other than just asking "what are 5 2's" or "what's 10x4" .

You could get him to do some times tables on some of the educational internet sites...woodlands school in kent have a good one I seem to recall. Haven't got the exact website address to hand but I'm sure you can google it. Otherwise, you could set him a written test yourself and time it so that he has an incentive to better his speed each occasion he does it. Boys normally respond to things like that. Can't come up with any other ideas but it sounds like he's great with numbers anyhow, which makes life alot easier for you
