Christ’s Hospital

Hello. We are starting to consider secondary schools for DD. There are a few in the mix but she has taken a particular shine to Christ’s Hospital (she likes the ethos of an education for everyone and I have to say that I agree with her). I don’t know a lot about it other than what is said on the website and the usual google search.
We would be paying full fees and most likely to consider her as a day girl (although that means a 30 minute each way commute I don’t really want her boarding, especially at 11!) Does anyone have up to date knowledge of the school? Is anyone currently paying full fees and wouldn’t mind sharing their perspective etc.

no up to date info - a good friend of DH went there but he is now late 40s so any info is well out of date. he is certainly one of the nicest chaps I know, really kind, thoughtful and self-possessed. somehow has managed to achieve the majority of the talents one tends to associate with an English public school education with none of the arrogance. if he is a typical product of the school then it was certainly doing a very good job 3-4 decades ago. not useful for you I know but I would also be interested in more recent views.

I knew a girl that went there, as a boarder, she was very bright and had a lot of opportunities and went on some fabulous trips to see ancient sites. Her education was funded by the church, her dad was a Vicar. It was quite a few years back. Hopefully someone will come along with current experiences. Good luck.

Thank you both for your views. Yinu it’a big draw is that looks like it could produce that sort of adult. We like the fact that it is a typical public school but without the pretentious elements and with a more diverse cohort. I would be very interested in the pastoral care and integration of day pupils (also could she transfer to boarding if she is feeling left out and I can bare to let her go! But I can ask the school that one)

@UnsureAndUnsteady Our DD has just left Christ's Hospital after 5 years (yr9-13) although she was a boarder as we lived overseas for most of that time. No school is perfect, but we have overall been very happy with her time at CH. Two of her closest friends were day pupils: do be aware that their days are long - most don't leave before 8pm at the earliest, and DD says that any who do cut their days shorter by not getting involved in activities will find it harder to integrate. I'm sure you're aware that there is Saturday school too. I feel that we have seen the worst and the best of the pastoral care at the school: at its best it is excellent - and as so many teachers live on site, the school is packed with highly dedicated staff who give CH their all. I'd be really happy to chat further if you'd like to PM me.

I think the day pupils miss out on a lot. Perhaps day for year 7 and then think about boarding.

It's a really fantastic school. I know many who have been, some all the way from y7 and some sixth form only. But they've all thrived and had a ball.
I am local the area, involved in education and have a very high opinion of it.
