What are the chances of schools and universities being open by September?

The lockdown has started to be lifted and some children are now back at school, but the R number is still worryingly close to 1 in some places and protests over the weekend have done nothing to lower this. The University of Cambridge has already announced it has scrapped online teaching next year and other unis are moving to more online teaching with face to face teaching in small groups. Some councils are asking schools to stay closed, and even where schools are open, many parents don't want to send there kids.

So, all things considered, what do you think education will look like from September?

The online lectures thing is actually very misleading. It's easy to run lectures online. Some courses may have 200-300 students in a lecture theatre with little opportunity for student interaction. The true value is added in the seminars & tutorials which Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester, KCL...are all still planning to hold face to face.

Is that confirmed? I wasn't aware decisions had been made about tutorials yet.

DS is hoping to start a course at Cambridge in October. Obviously nothing is certain, but they seem to be making plans for the following:
Large group lectures (12 per week): online.
Supervisions (4 per week): hopefully face-to-face.
Practicals (3 per fortnight): hopefully in person.

For primary schools the question I think it'ls not just whether they will be open but what level of education they will provide. Particularly if they are part time /bubbles have to close/ the children in the class have all progressed to different extents

Just read the websites. Every university wants to get as many back through the doors asap or they won't be here next year.

It seems that classes would be a mixture of online and face to face both for unis and high schools. (Not sure about primary schools.) But students would be expected to be on campus.

It will be really difficult if children are in and out self isolating.

But children at a range of abilities is the norm. When I taught Y6, it was not unusual to have a range of abilities from reception level to some who could have held their own in Y8. Good teachers have always assessed and taught to the gaps with differentiation and they will continue to do so.
