How many of you who would like your children to go back to school next week have NOT got a place to go back to?

My dd11 has not been allowed back to school next week due to space. She's disappointed, but recognised that she's doing well academically and she has a good home and that other children may need the places more. I'm a sahm and have a younger ds too so having her home is no skin off my back. I am 99.9% sure I had the virus back in March just as lockdown started, but before widespread testing. I'm sure the kids were exposed as they kept jumping into bed with.

I'm just wondering how common it is that families who want their children to return to school are unable to.

Me

It’s going to be very common

There’s too many kids not enough teachers not enough space.

I think this is going to be another teacher bashing thread.

Yes, my y6 child is desperate to go but no space for her at the moment. She's academically able so not concerned from an educational point of view but she could do with a return to a bit more structure. Especially as our family has suffered due to multiple bereavements.

My Reception dd would love to go back, especially as her sister goes back to nursery next week. School are starting with y6 and will open for year 6 only when they feel able to do so safely. I absolutely respect them for making that decision. Means when she does go back, I trust that they can care for her safely (mentally and emotionally as well as physically)

Will open for younger years I mean

Sorry no teacher bashing from me. I love her teacher, he's great It's an academy so decisions are made by nameless, faceless boss in a central office or the school's slt.

I just feel sad for her. She just want her routine back and to see her friends. None of them are going to the same secondary so I don't know if they'll all ever go to school together again.

I would have liked DS to go back, but there's no space as priority has ( rightly) been given to families with both parents working - I don't currently.

No teacher bashing here - our school is fabulous! I just would have liked DS to go back.

What is clear is that schools are taking their own decisions on when and how to open. Some are being told what to do by LAs and also by Trust Boards of academies but many schools seem to be interpreting the guidance from the DfE in many different ways and formats.
What the guidance says is that the pupils that should be in school and should have been in school since the end of March are those of key workers and those considered vulnerable.
From sometime after 1st June then years 6,1 and reception should be introduced as full time pupils with schools assuming that all pupils will turn up (no chance!). They can be scheduled to start at different points but the expectation is clear that it is full time schooling for those year groups in classes of no more than 15. It is also very clear that the DfE accept the social distancing rule of 2 metres is not possible with primary pupils.
Those schools that have decided to bring in other year groups are, according to most legal companies, taking a risk if they do bring in other year groups. Schools that are operating some kind of part time scheduling are also introducing both a child protection and Covid -19 risk according to many legal people.
I can only see this mess of so many schools doing their own version of the guidance ending in tears but we will wait and see

Not school, but DS childminder not reopening yet

MadCap · 30/05/2020 20:59

My dd is in year 6 and they've only taken 16 of the 50ish in her year.

Tbf, we have almost every child returning (95%+) amongst the 'wider opening to specific year groups' group. Not all keyworkers / vulnerables who are eligible to are taking up their places, though.
