Hi, Moving to near Reigate and e we would like thoughts about local prep schools. Only know of Hawthorns as friends went there (but 20 years ago!) and loved it. All advice gratefully received,

have a look at: (will link school websites below)

Reigate st marys- liked to Reigate grammar school and so from my understanding, if your dc attend the prep school they don't sit the 11+ exam for the grammar

downsend goes up to GCSE year

cranmore goes up to sixth form

Have a look at Copthorne Prep too. My son started there 3 years ago and we adore it. It’s lovely and nurturing and they really encourage the children to find their ‘thing’, whether they are academic, sporty or artsy. They have been brilliant over lockdown too Smile

Raven416 · 22/05/2020 16:31

Thanks for that. Copthorne probably a bit far as we're moving to South Nutfield but hadn’t thought about Reigate St Mary’s and then straight onto senior school without trauma of taking 11+. Tempting. Two of our dc school age - Y1 and Y3. Haven’t been to any open days/visits so can only go on looking at websites and word of mouth. Hawthorns logistically would be best for us so any views would be great. Looks like it’s set in lovely grounds.

I know both RSM and Hawthorns well.

RSM is linked to a Reigate Grammar and most but not all get the green light to proceed to the Grammar without exam. It’s not so nice a yr5 and 6 for those who don’t get the green light or who choose to go elsewhere. But if your kids are academic and that’s the senior you definitely want it can be a good choice because 11+ is stressful. It doesn’t have the traditional Prep feel of Hawthorns, partly because it doesn’t have the Yr 7 and 8s. They don’t do Latin or as many languages and it is more of a town based school. Although some drive in from outside Reigate/Redhill and the v close villages, it’s more locally based than Hawthorns. Lots seem to walk in, which is good as the traffic to get there and parking is bad. Lots of people choose it for the through to the Grammar thing. It’s had lots of investment in the last 15 years and gets to use some grammar facilities such as the pool or sports ground down in Woodhatch.

Hawthorns as you know is in an amazing setting. There is good use of the woods and grounds in the learning and it seems to keep children young, perhaps because it’s a bit cut off. The main secondaries they feed into are Caterham, Dunnottar, Reigate Grammar but they also send to the 13+ public schools for boarding and schools like Whitgift, woldingham, Ardingly, Sevenoaks, Hurst. Some of these are very academic and some less so. I think many Hawthorns parents are not dead set on a certain Senior school at entry but like the fact kids go to lots of places and choices can be gradually made. So Hawthorns do prep for a range of entrance exams but early yr 6 is quite a stressful time for families, although some later say their kids gained from having to go through process. There’s a lot of specialist teaching from Yr3 including seceral languages as they go up school. Existence of Yr 7 and 8 make it feel different to a primary or prep that goes to 11. I think fees are RSM and Hawthorns are similar. Hawthorns probably draws from a wider geographical area to include Reigate, Horley area, Caterham, Oxted, up to Walton and Kingswood and down to Crawley plus all the villages. Lots of parents went to traditional Preps or boarding schools and perhaps trust the school to advise about appropriate secondaries and can see value in different types of schools for different kids - siblings often seem to go onto different seniors

There’s also Micklefield in Reigate which sends about half to the Grammar and half to Dunnottar, plus a few around the Caterham area like Oakhyrst Grange.

I’d imagine both are offering virtual tours and could put you in touch with current parents for a chat. Hard to choose when you can’t visit. Both are good and seem to produce confident kids who are well prepared for the next stage, so you can’t really go wrong with either.

WombatChocolate · 22/05/2020 19:28

What kind of school are your kids in now?
Is it a 2-11 prep which feeds most into a linked senior school?
Is it a prep which sends to lots of different seniors?
Town or country?

You might feel more at home at one or the other.

Raven416 · 23/05/2020 09:08

That’s really helpful - thanks so much and sort of clarified what I had a sense of. Two older dc at Dulwich prep. Yes - Hawthorns was always our favourite partly because it works travel wise. Sounds very much like a good all rounder and that the kids would enjoy the space. Would need to visit in person though to get a feel for the Head, kids and staff. I assume some in Y6 etc will be back after half term so maybe doing visits then..? Will be gutted to take kids out of Dulwich as it’s a fabulous school with great teaching. But it’ll be nice to have a bit more space!

Caterham also has a prep school and Lingfield College is about 20/25 minutes drive away (they run dedicated buses for secondary pupils). Both have extensive grounds. Hawthorns has changed over past few years, the Pre Prep has been restructured and it no longer works towards CE at year 8. More emphasis on sporting achievements. Head's dc are going to Caterham for secondary so a larger cohort of parents seem to be looking there now whereas historically more went Reigate Grammar.

Raven416 · 27/05/2020 10:43

That’s interesting. Thanks. Funnily enough, heard slightly mixed reviews of Hawthorns recently but it will be our closest prep school. Really do need to visit. Not sure yet if I’d want dc to stay or leave at Y6. Do you think getting rid of CE is a good thing? I suppose if children don’t need it, it takes away exam stress?

They are doing a specific year 7 and 8 curriculum instead. Not sure how it works with those few who do still need CE but most of the day secondaries it feeds now pretest in year 6/7 and offer deferred year 9 entry. Year 7 was already dwindling in numbers, especially girls, prior to this but not sure how many stay on now (might be worth asking). Some of the more experienced Prep staff moved on in the wake of the change. Likes of RSM, Chinthurst and Micklefield never did CE so all pupils work towards 11+ entry.

Some of the trips have changed in recent years too. Year 6 used to do an exchange with a French school and stay in pupils' homes (and vice versa) but now they stay in a hostel together.

Raven416 · 30/05/2020 23:45

Ok. Thanks. That’s good to know. Might be better to cast the net wider then. Was probably looking to move them on after Y6 and keen they get fairly rigorous 11+/pre-test preparation. Slight alarm bells at hearing about dwindling numbers and high staff turnover recently. Probably not something I’d pick up from visiting so thanks,

Not meaning to be negative, just really to point out that it has changed since your friends' day. Sometimes a new head (think he's been there 4 years now), and opportunities for some younger staff to step up, can be a good thing and bring a fresh perspective.

Raven416 · 01/06/2020 22:33

That’s a good point. I’ll arrange a visit as soon as I can and will see if I can speak to any recent/current patents to get their perspectives. Thanks so much.

I believe that about 1/3 leave Hawthorns at 11 and about 2/3 stay on....from year groups of about 60. Given that they all do their entrance exams in Yr6 now, for either Yr7 entry or Yr9 deferred entry, they all prepare for the entrance exams towards end of Yr5 and start of Yr6 ready for mostly Jan exams, but adjust if a specific school (and it feeds over 12 schools most years) has different dates.

I don't think it has declined in number overall. Liz was referring to Yr7. The numbers who leave at the end of Yr6 vary a bit each year, with more girls going as girls schools tend to do 11+, but often some new ones come into Yr7 too, waiting for 13+ places.

You'd have to visit and check out numbers for the last 3 or 4 years staying on beyond 11, but I think it's always well over half.

13+ schools do have a different feel to the standard 11+ Prep. They often have more specialist teachers as more year groups need them and they need to teach to a senior school level, getting students ready to start GCSE courses in Yr9 in many schools. Opportunities for those in Yr7 and 8 as Prefects are very different as they are the big fish in a smaller pond, rather than the little ones in a big senior school. They also tend to feed a wider range of secondaries and not just the local day school or two. So every year some will move into boarding schools many miles away, as well as many going to local day schools. It is more of a traditional Prep experience rather than a Junior school experience where most are heading into the same next place.

Ask about numbers staying on at 11 and also numbers going to the different senior schools over the last few years to get more of a picture.

It's hard when you can't visit. You do get a strong sense from that and seeing the children.

Raven416 · 23/06/2020 14:55

Thanks for that. Much appreciated. Did visit recently but wasn’t impressed by head so visiting a few more over next couple of weeks before term ends.

From South Nutfield it would be worth looking the other direction from Reigate - towards Caterham, Oxted, etc, as others have mentioned.

Hi there!

I've just moved to Crawley and I wanted to know what the primary schools are like here from other mums in the area please.

The 3 closest to me are Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Primary School, Langley Green Primary school and Northgate Primary School.

Any comments about these and other primary schools in the area would be very much appreciated. Also I don't mind traveling a bit further if a school is better.

Alternatively, we don't mind a private school as long as its not overpriced.

Many thanks
