"write a rule for recognising even numbers"
" odd numbers"
"what do you notice about the multiples of 6"

even numbers are divisable by 2
odd numbers are not divisble by 2
multiples of 6 are all even

SlightlyMadSweden · 16/09/2007 13:56

even numbers are like 2's and 4's
odd numbers are the others
multiples of 6 are really hard

might get a "See Me" if you put that!!

Multiples of 6 are also all multiples of 3.

I'd say
"even numbers end in 2,4,6,8 or 0"
"odd numbers end in 1,3,5,7 or 9"
as it's a rule for recognising even numbers rather than a rule for even numbers - you don't actually have to divide by 2 to recognise them.

Multiples of 6 are, of course, multiples of two (so the even mumber applies) and of 3. Multiples of 3 have digits that add up to multiples of 3, e.g.

327

3+2+7= 12

You can keep doing that:

1+2=3

until you reach 3, 6 or 9.

So multiples of 6 also have that property.

At seven and a half he may well not be expected to know the multiple of 3 trick, but may be quite entertained by it
