How much do you pay per hour for private GCSE tuition?

I'm an English teacher on maternity leave. I just got approached to give a local lad private English tuition for his GCSEs. If I decide to do this, how much should I charge, and what are parents' general expectations?

Thanks in advance!

Years ago I did A level for £25 an hour

What do parents expect? Depends on the parent I would think. I'd have a chat with them up front.

I charged £18 for french a while back - it varies from area to area though I think

Thanks all. Any experiences of the possible pitfalls of this? Are you expected to go to them, or they to you?

Mine was a sixth former, who came to me, but I got her mother to check us out first, just to put minds at rest. (I had small children at the time)

My brother does more tutoring than I have, and he tends to go to their houses.

I hire tutors through an agency. The rate is £26 per hour, plus a £3 payment per visit for travelling expenses. Seems to be the going rate (midlands)

I tutored for a number of years. Usually I went to them, but some came to me. I charged between £15 to £40/hour (depending on where/who etc- the £40 hour was a central London school- I didn't get paid that much).

They went to the children's homes (obv from my prev comment). All are CRB checked when you go through an agency.
I appreciate that as a teacher you have been CRBd, but how long ago?
Our authority expects it to be within the last 3 years, and is the enhanced disclosure.

You may also want to check whether you will be alone in the house with him.

Yes, have got CRB enhanced disc.

Thanks for all the useful messages. Hadn't thoguht about the issue of being in the house alone (I don't suppose the two smallies count for these purposes!).

Still don't know what to do! He would have to come to me (I could make sure DH was around) but I worry about little babes crying and me having to dash off for 10 mins to flop a boob out....not very professional!!!!!

To those of you who tutored, did this money have to be 'declared' for tax purposes??? (Dodgy question I know!) Not sure how this all works.

erm... I think you probably already know the answer to that one!

Our in the country I paid £15 per hour for a very experienced English Teacher for DS2's English GCSE. However, she did say that in our local (famous university) town, her friend was charging £25 per hour. We also paid a qualified but less experienced (aged around 30) teacher £20 per hour for Maths tuition. I think we did very well!
