Hi everyone.
Wondering if anyone has experience of year 2 children as a teacher or parent and can give me some insight into what they are doing/what they can do, please?
Has anyone found any good websites or activities they can do independently while I work?
Mainly interested in English and maths.
Have worked out he can do 2,5,10 x tables, anyone know what they learn next?
Thank you in advance! Smile

Can he do the times tables backwards, i.e, division. If you divide 70 by 10 what is the answer? If you divide 70 by 7 what is the answer?

My class is looking at place value this week in maths.

They are retelling a traditional tale in English, and are encouraged to use a variety of techniques to make their writing more interesting (simile, repetition, alliteration, good use of adjectives, etc.).

We haven’t set worksheets (lots of children don’t have access to a printer), but if you wish, Twinkl has good resources, and is free access at the moment.

Times tables rock stars for times tables
Reading eggs for phonics/comprehension
Mathseeds for maths.

Reading eggs and Mathseeds teaches as they go, and you can do a test to set them at the right level.

Depending on reading skill they can also move to reading express which is comprehension.

My year 3 and year 1 have been using it since reception.

Times tables rock stars has been fab for time tables as it teaches them the division as well as the tables

In terms of maths I would definitely use the time to develop his reasoning rather than forging on with the curriculum (which will only need to be repeated again anyway). So if he's doe multiplication use it in context e.g. I want to buy 5 3p sweets how much would that be? What about 3 5p sweets? If that's too easy add another step into the calculation How much change will I get from 50p if I buy 4 10p cakes at a bake sale? As well as simply learning the times tables by heart (and this fluency is useful) make sure he understands how to calculate an unfamiliar multiplication. E.g. 17 x 2.

Likewise as a PP said can he do the calculation backwards so 10 x something = 70. Then if this is OK put it into context again - "Harry bought 10 sweets and paid 50p how many sweets did he buy?". Or "Belle has £1 pocket money and owes her sister 25p, she saves 50p and spends the rest on some 5p sweets how many does she buy?".

Thanks everyone, I’ll take a look at suggestions here and try and push to find out more about what he knows!
