Independent school teachers-has your pay been cut?

Just that really. (Mine has.)

Not year, but would not be surprised if it happens. People are bleating in other threads about having to pay school fees. If they pull their kids out then we will have either pay yay or redundancies and I definitely prefer the former!

FlowerAndBloom · 03/04/2020 12:03

Pay cuts would be quite an aggressive and unpopular measure considering schools can furlough all non teaching staff and can access up to £5 million pounds in business support loans. I do not expect schools to place the burden in teachers rather than utilising help. OP have you requested to see the schools finances yet?

Schmedz · 03/04/2020 18:07

No (and hopefully won't be, either given the extra hours put into developing brand new programmes with unfamiliar technology in a very short time frame!!)

Our school, however, is small and there is concern over potential redundancies should we lose pupils for the new academic year (in combination with the huge increase from TPS contributions, in line with most other small independent schools, there's no guarantees on the financial stability of the school at all).

FlowerAndBloom · 03/04/2020 19:40

Brillaint get out for schools in the new TPS contributions

ellie2201 · 03/04/2020 22:22

No but I’m being furloughed. Full pay though.

Chocstar · 04/04/2020 00:08

DH teaches at an independent school and will be having a pay cut. The school has furloughed staff, but that hasn't been enough apparently.

ploughingthrough · 05/04/2020 06:00

Not yet. But in the school I recently left this has happened.
I currently work in an international private school and many parents are having their fees paid by companies not direct by parents.
But I am the Head of an arts department and no matter how whizzy my online lessons are, there is no way I can be value for money at the moment with no concerts, events, extra-curricular or resources for the students at home. I wouldn't be that surprised if there was a cut.

ShimmerandShining · 06/04/2020 06:59

@ellie2201 have you essentially had a pay cut through furlough because of the cap on earnings through furlough? I think most teachers earn in average more than £2500 gross a month resulting in quite a cut to net pay?

Pegase · 06/04/2020 07:01

No but previously agreed annual pay rises now won't be taking place

ellie2201 · 06/04/2020 07:31

@ShimmerandShining no, furloughed teachers are all staying on full pay. I don’t earn over that anyway!

ShimmerandShining · 06/04/2020 07:50

@ellie2201 I think most teachers do earn more than 23k on average though so wondering about how that will work with furlough. You are very lucky your school are topping up full time staff. £2500 gross is £1995 net a month so wondering how some full time teachers earning more than 24K will cope

ellie2201 · 06/04/2020 07:54

Yes lots of staff earn more than that but it still will save the school a lot of money.

I don’t even want to think about the impact on independent schools if we don’t re open in September. I think that will mean school
closures and lots of job losses for sure.

Whatsallthisaboutthen · 06/04/2020 07:55

We’re doing a combination of furloughing and pay cuts. (Plus cuts to fees.)

Whatsallthisaboutthen · 06/04/2020 07:57

Someone asked about seeing the school’s finances-the short answer is that they’ve been requested but haven’t been entirely forthcoming. The union rep has been good though.

OP posts:
CanICelebrate · 06/04/2020 08:00

No and we’ve been reassured for now that it won’t be. I’m still doing my job and still working very hard.

AppleKatie · 06/04/2020 08:01

No not yet. Furloughed non teaching staff are being topped up and no teaching staff have been furloughed.

They need us to sort out the A level and GCSE grades this year and ensure that next years cohort are properly supported. Fortunately they are in a strong enough position to be able to still value this.

Whatsallthisaboutthen · 06/04/2020 10:17

Goodness. We’re still working very hard too! I’m glad it’s not happening everywhere at any rate.

OP posts:
AppleKatie · 06/04/2020 10:56

Furloughed staff cannot work.

I hope your union is making that very clear to the school!

ShimmerandShining · 06/04/2020 18:54

Imagine if they did this to NHS staff

Dahlietta · 06/04/2020 21:36

We've had a 'voluntary' pay cut.

DrDreReturns · 06/04/2020 21:43

Yes AppleKatie, otherwise companies would just furlough staff and still get their services while the government pays their salaries!

ellie2201 · 06/04/2020 22:55

@Dahlietta do you mind me asking how much of a pay cut? I’m surprised schools are doing this so soon!

ellie2201 · 06/04/2020 22:59

@AppleKatie I’m not a member of a union but school has made it clear I won’t be working. I won’t be in for the key worker kids, the other teacher in the Department will be setting all the work and liaising with parents etc. In some ways I’m disappointed, in others I’m relieved as it means I can focus on home schooling my own two kids.
I know it’s unlikely but I REALLY hope we go back before the end of summer term so I can see my class all together again. Sad

AppleKatie · 06/04/2020 23:03

That’s really hard @ellie2201 I’m sorry Sad

ellie2201 · 06/04/2020 23:06

I consider myself one of the lucky ones to be honest! Still on full salary and with a job - I’ve heard of so many people in far worse situations (not teachers). Who knows where all this is going to lead?
