With an essay you need to begin by saying ewhat you are going to write, ie I will tell you the Was famous cos of a b and c, then do a para or two about a b and c, then your conclusion should basically recap what you have written, ie, so The war was famous because of a b and c. Always seemed a bit longwinded and pointless but that is the way I was taught to write an essay.

Trench warfare it a starter for one...

ChristmasPud · 11/09/2007 19:57

It was the 1st modern 'total war' which followed the predictions of Clauswitz. It used modern weapons and technology. It impacted greatly on the civillian population whereas more traditional warfare tended to involve battles which mostly affected those in the armies fighting. Then there is the obvious horrific numbers of people killed which was on a scale never seen before - again partly due to the modern technologies used. First war where aeroplanes were used. The tank was invented. Machine guns, submarines etc Trench warefare used - though this had been used previously in the American civil war on a lesser scale.

Brought about by the rise of the nation states in Europe. A J P Taylors theory was that this made war inevitable as all the netions were so geared up for it that they then couldn't turn back. Arms race between UK and Germany in terms of naval power. Umm and then of course there is the poetry...

Does that help?

Bewilderbeast · 11/09/2007 19:57

you could try to make yourself a spider diagram (brainstorm) of things that come to mind when you think of the first world war. i.e first major modern 'global' conflict. first use of aircraft in war (i think). etc etc once you identify the points you want to make then set out your essay as BoM suggests with a beginning an middle and an end

This is a strange essay title. What qualification are you studying for?

ChristmasPud · 11/09/2007 20:00

Oh and was taught in history a-level to start each paragraph with a 'signpost sentence'. This basically outlines what the argument or subject of that paragraph will be. You then spend the rest of the paragraph elabourating on your argument. Providing evidence for and against using quotes, primary and secondary sources. Found this useful to prevent me wandering off too much and really get the thing organised fairly crisply. If a paragraph got too long then was an indicator that I was dealing with too much argument in one go and should split it up.
