How do I homeschool?

My sons home learning pack are very very limited. 12 words to learn, sentences to write with these words.

I set up a twinkl account and will pay the monthly subscription to keep him going but How do I know where my child is on the curriculum?

I printed worksheets off for him which seemed too difficult for him. He’s in primary 4 in Scotland and apparent is doing well and coping well.

feeling incredibly out of my depth. I’m a SAHM and want to dedicate the time in his education but where do I start?

Just don't. Take this time to work on life skills and mental health. Get outside as much as possible, watch films the make you both laugh. Dance, sing, cook. It's going to be hard enough for families, don't do it to yourself.

Really? It could be 6 months. I feel like I need to put some effort into teaching him, engaging him.

I also have a toddler so it’s difficult to manage. We can’t just watch a film together as the toddler wants entertained too.

Sad

Schools haven't had much time to prepare learning packs, teachers were still teaching this week, that didn't stop. I expect more will be emailed to you. In the meantime enjoy the weekend.

I wouldn't stress about it. Many private schools break up for Easter next week and are off till end of April. Those kids never have school during that time. I would say until after Easter, just take things easy. You may need basic structure eg no TV till 3pm, same snack and lunch time to give you all sanity. But try to enjoy it. You'll never get this time again and if you try to replicate school you'll have a mental breakdown. Homeschoolers do a lot less work because it's so intense 1:1.
Audible has just released hundreds of free audio books. Twinkl has also made subs free this month for parents, so don't pay for that. There's so many companies doing the same. Baking, dancing, reading and just letting them play will be of huge benefit to them. The first couple of days will be hard with limited screens but kids do get their imagination back and they'll think of ways.
Enjoy it.

I am a teacher so I will be in my school a lot of the time, but I am intending to do some home schooling if/when I am with the children.

DH is working from home, so while I am at work, the DC (4,6,10) will be left to go feral so he can work! The only rule is they can’t have devices until they’ve got at least 10,000 steps on their fitbits! We are lucky to have a big garden, so they have been playing football/in the sandpit and building a den.

When I am home, I will do a timetable of maths, spelling, handwriting and reading. As they are all such different ages I will have one doing e.g. Doodle maths on the iPad while I teach the other one maths and then swap. The youngest is in nursery so he’ll be mainly doing fine/gross motor stuff. Lots of outside time will be on the cards.

I am very thankful that we have the space and resources to do this and that, as there are 3 of them, they have other children to play with. We will all get through this!

12 words to learn, you can expand it by trying to look up the meaning, finding synonyms/antonyms, using the words in sentences, etc.
Easiest thing you can do is buy the work book and do it a page a day etc, and if he found something difficult, you can always come back here and ask specific questions how to help him.
If he enjoys online works, there are many fun learning site too.

@InspectorAlleyn - can I just say that I love that rule about fit bits and devices. Definitely one to remember for when DD is a bit bigger!

I’m a secondary school teacher and senior leader.
To support parents during the Covid 19 crisis I’m uploading a week’s worth of completely free lessons for all/most subjects. They’re applicable for all secondary school age groups.

If you’d like to access them click on tiny.cc/homelearning

For info on the activities or if you need help you can email me at [email protected]

Take care everyone

That looks great. Thank you, TeachRmike.

They break up soon, just do what has been sent and read to them is the best thing you can do.
Twinkle were at one time owned by a paedophile. Not sure if he's gone now.
