What happens to school offer if I move house?

Can anyone give any advice please?

My son has just been offered a secondary place, I have since been told my tenancy is finished in the summer. Potentially I may have to move out of the catchment area. Is his place still safe?

Not if you move out of the area I shouldn't think.

If you’ve got your offer it’s fine. He has a place at that school no matter where you move to.

You should be totally fine. You haven't broken any rules at all. You haven't even bent them.

Pilot12 · 12/03/2020 15:17

Don't tell them you've moved until after school has started, you can get your mail redirected so you don't miss any, that's if you want him to keep his place at that school. They won't make you change schools once he's started.

hmm, I'm not convinced. I think (but not sure) that the offer is based on the fact that you will still be resident there on 1st September.

You need @prh47 she is the one who knows all about school admissions.

There must be stuff in palce for this, so one option is to phone the admissions department and explain and ask what happens now.

for anyone who has been offered a place under false pretenses, eg the wrong address, they absolutley do and will remove the place, ie you will have to leave the school.

But this case in not deliberate false pretenses etc, it is moving house. Not sure what the rules are

prh47bridge · 12/03/2020 15:41

The Admissions Code is clear that they cannot take your place away just because you have moved. There are only very limited grounds on which an offer can be withdrawn. Moving house is not one of them.

Unfortunately I can't guarantee that your LA won't try. I do occasionally come across cases where LAs try to withdraw places after people move. If that happens you should appeal and I would expect you to win.

As steppemum says, they can and some LAs do. If they conclude that the application was fraudulent or intentionally misleading they can withdraw the place even after the child has started.

Thank you everyone for you advice.

Prh47bridge - thank you, that’s put my mind at rest. Its good to know I can appeal if it came to it.
