Any St Albans parents here? Advice sought re transport to Edge Grove/Lockers Park and other Herts prep schools

Hello

We live in St Albans and our DS and DD are currently in Y1 and Reception at our local state primary. However, we have some issues with it plus some concerns about the connected Junior school meaning we'd like to look at other options and in particular private prep schools for 7+ entry, first for our DS for 2021.

We're struggling with the logistics however, as there are no prep schools in St A itself other than a boys Catholic school (which I'm not keen on), and DH and I both work in London meaning we may struggle with drop off and definitely with pick-up.

Most of the prep schools don't run a school bus which rules them out for us (Beechwood Park does but it's the wrong side of town for us and just too far). We're going to look at Lockers Park (which does have a bus) but I wondered if anyone else is or knows St Albans parents in a similar boat and how they manage? I can't believe that all the children that attend all these schools have at least one stay-at-home or very-part-time working parent to do drop off and pick up. Confused Am I missing something?

Edge Grove is another school we'd like to consider (not least as it's mixed which we'd prefer to single sex) and it does have a school bus in the morning which would help, but no bus back home.

We could perhaps in theory drive to Radlett station to pick up the train to London and then in the evening come back in time for the 6pm final end of school day. But aside from the fact it would be a long day for DS we'd be very dependent on the trains running on time to get back there and I'm just not sure it's doable.

We currently have an after-school nanny but I'm not sure how impressed she'd be at becoming a glorified taxi service for an hour each day (and our DS would have to be dragged with her unless we were able to move her into Y2 when our son started Y1).

Definitely not interested in boarding options.

Sorry for the stream of conciousness but as I say I do wonder if I'm missing something in terms of how others square this circle. Thanks for any info you can give.

Don’t know much about the bus routes/times - but Lockers does have one. Are the details not on their website?

They also have early drop (breakfast), late evenings (supper) and flexi-boarding if you need it.

I’d say don’t discount Beechwood Park until you’ve seen it. Vast majority of pupils live in St. Alban’s or Harpenden and bus service well used and most likely good chance of getting your younger one to start at the same time (though they do have different finish times between y2 and y3.

@ChateauMyself yes Lockers has a bus which looks like it would work for us so it’s a definite contender.
Will have a better look at Beechwood Park @Elpheba, but I think hubby would take a lot of persuading as it is right the other side of town for us and he’s very anti- a long commute for the kids.

The Lockers bus has several drop off/collection points in St Albans (including close to the train station) at approx 8am and 6.15pm so works well with commuting. The school is open for the children from 7:30am to 7pm with no prior arrangement necessary and will give them breakfast/supper etc. It's really working parent friendly as well as being a wonderful school. Feel free to PM me

Westbrook Hay has a minibus service there and back to St Albans.

Thanks @Zodlebud, and @jmw2020. Will look into Westbrook Hay.
We're going to the Lockers open morning (can't remember if it's this weekend or next) so may drop you a line @jmw2020 after that. It's definitely the main contender for me at the moment but I think hubby is yet to be persuaded that the local schools are that bad to justify going down the private route at this stage (and they're really not bad, it's just there's a few things we're not happy about).

Westbrook Hay open morning is this Saturday.

Hi,

We are considering Lockers Park and was wondering if anyone had further insight as several people on this thread seem to have firsthand knowledge.

Our sons are Lower Prep and Pre-Prep age and while I believe they would both benefit from what Lockers Park has to offer now, I'm worried they might outgrow the school as they reach their early teens.

Thanks!
