Guildford schools (secondary) - train travel advice

Hello!
If you have children at G'ford schools who travel by train....what's the best way of doing tickets? Weekly? Monthly? Assume there's nothing like 'termly' available? Annual?
Also, if child is under 16yrs...do they get a child ticket rate?

Thanks!

We purchase the tickets with the smart card system on line-takes the hassle out of it all. I think they get better rates but not sure. You select the dates you want the card to cover, so it is half termly-that way you don't pay for any dates they are off school.

We also used to get tickets up to particular dates - in practice for the half term.

And yes to the child rate. Once they are 16, you can also get a cheaper rate (though not as cheap as child rate) through a special card available from Surrey County Council (only for Surrey residents I think).

We have done a variety of ways. Yes, discounted for under 16's and in that case best to get half termly ones ie: don't include the half terms.

Over 16, the Surrey County Council card was good with, I think, a 30% reduction, but we now use the 16/17 discount card which is 50%, but you can only use this for dailys/weeklies. With this our best price is getting a weekly. I did start by getting the half termly, but then SW(bloody)trains with all their strikes last year, we lost three weeks, and then they only refund you a percentage, which meant we may as well have bought a weekly anyway!

There are more strikes on the way, and with all things being equal with potential school closures etc, I think best to stick with weekly.
