My son is Summer born...challenging behaviour...bright and healthy but extremely hard to parent and to teach.

All his friends from nursery were younger than him by a month or two and therefore will be starting recetion this year.

Can anyone give me advice / strategies about making it possible for him to be held back a year at school???

He goes to a private school. We have considered seeing a pediatrician about his behaviour in the past but never did as we didn't want him labelled and drugged. However, we are getting desparate now.

I'd talk to the school. Certainly private schools have a lot more flexibility, and there will be one child repeating reception this year, as well as another repeating Year 2 (there may be more examples, but I have children going into these years, so am aware of these 2 examples). Our school is large enough that repeaters will have a different teacher second time round.

Your main issue will be the implicatiosn atYear 6. Unless your school goes through to 18 you will need to find another school willing to take him out of his year.

There are several children held back at my ds's school. However, none of the children have overtly disruptive behaviour issues. (Not suggesting that your boy has but there is a difference between a learning difficulty requiring support and a dispruptive child being willfull IYKWIM) Hopefully an extra year in the lower years will sort out your boy or highlight to the school where some support might meet his needs.

It's worth asking for him to be held back now as if he is still having problems at year 3 or so, they will probably have to look at whether his behaviour affects the other pupils.

Does the school go all the way up to seniors? If he is held back then it wouldn't be an issue within the same school when he got to GCSEs.

If you want him to re do Reception, talk to the school. if it is private i am sure it will be no problem. There is a boy at my dc's school repeating reception with no problmes

Food luck
