I have been well all holiday and now the thought of becoming a teacher again with all the long hours and grief has made me ill all day.

I am so stressed I have not been breathing properly all day so I now feel dizzy and sick and have am awful pain in my chest and my IBS has started again.

I always get like this for the last few days of the hols. Today I have done hours of "sorting" stuff - probably a complete waste of time but i needed to be doing something! I really look forward to the start of term but the last few days are hell.

Hope it all goes well for you twinset - good luck with the new post.

Twinset&pearls: head of Yr 7 is a big job but I have seen headofyear jobs made bigger than they need to be by teachers who insist on mollycoddling the kids and entering into their every problem, letting kids interrupt their every break, leaving their food congealing on the plate while they wipe metaphorical bottoms. Think DELEGATE and think WILL THIS KEEP? Not that I could ever be an effective year head in a million years .....

How about getting dh to worry about the childcare?

Blandmum · 03/09/2007 14:43

For that magic lightbulb momemt when one of the little blighters 'gets it'.

For the times a real little horror comes up to you in the supermarket, years after they have left school and they say how much they enjoyed their time with you on quite how this one works, but it does.

For the times when they actually ask you for a refernce, and you know that they trust yo with their future.

For 'that' quistion. The one that knocks your socks off and makes you rush to answer!

Elasticwoman · 03/09/2007 21:45

I wondered when you would show up on this thread Martianbishop. Good evening.

twinsetandpearls · 04/09/2007 01:17

Thanks for the advice elastic woman- I will bear that in mind when being presented with bottoms that need wiping!

Because you are awed and delighted and proud that we all trust you with the most precious things in our lives?

Blandmum · 04/09/2007 07:30

First day back for teaching (we had an INSET yesterday).

I only have one year 7 lesson today. We get the new year 7s back on their own fr a day.

Tomorrow is my first 'real' teaching. I alays feel a little nervous before the first real lesson. But once it starts you get back into the flow.

Mind you , my first class has some real 'characters' in it, so I may be posting 'Help!' on Wednesday afternoon.

flyingmum · 04/09/2007 18:18

First day in today but no tutor group this year so not dealing with kids. Will feel a bit wibbly wobbly until after tomorrow when back infront of real kids and can 'feel' how each class will be.

Oh and a IWB has just been installed and I haven't got a clue (apart from using it as a data projector) - tried to play with it today but the thing didn't have some number or other so couldn't do IWB stuff on it. Oh well. My 7 year old has just told me he can work on so maybe we'll go in on Saturday and he can teach me!

What makes it worthwhile, the girl I taught for the last three years who came in on a level 3 and just got a level 6 for her writing (she works soooo hard). The ones who make me laugh and let me loon around the classroom. The amazing girl who got all As Bs and Cs for her GCSEs despite being 9 months pregnant and in labour during one of her exams. The kids that say they hated your subject at primary but now really love it.

You'll be brilliant as a year 7 head of year. Very best of luck for the coming term.

NotAnOtter · 04/09/2007 18:21

god this thread title depresses me

cornsilk · 04/09/2007 18:24

Why's that then not an otter?

NotAnOtter · 04/09/2007 18:25

Christie, though of you today, when I met a child who has just come into MS from a special school. Parental insistance that he came to us, against all educational advice.

If the poor child makes a term it will be miraculous

seeker · 04/09/2007 23:08

Thank you Christie and martian - you restore my faith in the teaching profession, and reassure me that my children are safe with you!

Because we parents really, really appreciate what you do for our children. It really matters. Most of what the rest of us do for our livings doesn't, ultimately.

sweetkitty · 05/09/2007 12:23

I want to retrain as a teacher once the DDs are old enough can't decide between Primary or a Secondary Biology/Science teacher. Wish wish wish I could start training just now but lack of child care prevents me and I want another baby so am stuck.

Maybe one day..........

hana · 05/09/2007 12:24

twinset, you need to have some nice thing to look forward to as well - maybe a facial on the weekend or a shopping trip with a friend - an dyo u have to plan these in as well and don't let them slip

I"ve just gone back after a year off ( mat leave) and am doing 2 dyas. so far so good - first week was inset, so havent taught yet. am bit excited to be back a bit.

I have booked a pedicure for the weekend!

and get a lceaner
and do your shopping on line, 2 less things to do

twinsetandpearls · 05/09/2007 23:23

Thanks NotanOtter I am actually a very good teacher and your child would be very lucky to have a school full of teachers as dedicated, hard working and actually as good at their job as me.

Like many teachers I get a the jitters after a long holiday, especially one which has seen a lot of personal upheaval as mine has.

THe stresses of my job does take its toll but if you look at my first post I am not complaining about children but the hours and expectations of the job, and even complaining is not the word as I said it was nerves.

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 05/09/2007 23:25

seeker are you implying that your children are not safe with me.

FFS any other job and you could say after being off for a few weeks that you feel a bit apprehensive about going back, are worried about getting used to long days again and that is fine.

But if you are a teacher and have a whinge you are an imcompetent waste of tax payers money who is a danger to children.

twinsetandpearls · 05/09/2007 23:29

Right feel better now.

Am loving it now I am back and loving my new role , am very tired th elong hours are a shock to the system after six weeks, hence I ahve not been on here.

Thanks for the advice, have booked a hair cut and day at the spa on saturday.

At the moment we can't afford a cleaner but once I have had a month or two of my new salary we should be able to afford one which will make life much easier.

The hardest thing to be honest is not having proper childcare which means I can't get into work until about 8.20 nearly 2 hours later than I am usually in, but I am trying not to do an hour in the morning before dd gets up.

WendyWeber · 05/09/2007 23:31

twinset, I was just going to say that going back to any job after 6 weeks off can be nervewracking - never mind one as essential, important and time-consuming as yours. I think people who haven't worked for years can forget that.

twinsetandpearls · 05/09/2007 23:43

THanks WEndy

seeker · 06/09/2007 10:02

twinsetandpearls - of course I'm not saying that. I wasn't thinking of you when I responded to Christie - I was just so pleased to read her enthusiasm I replied without considering. Sorry. It's just a bit depressing and worrying when you are about to send your children off to be cared for, taught and influenced by strangers to be reminded that some of those strangers are only doing it for the holidays. I don't think that about you - you wouldn't be posting on here about it if that was how you thought. But there are people like that and it is hell on earth to know that your child in in the hands of one.Spare a thought for us worried parents!!!!!

twinsetandpearls · 06/09/2007 23:06

I was probably feeling guilty about having a moan about my job I try really hard never to complain in public as it feeds the stereotype that all teachers are lazy whinging gits who are only in it for the holidays.

I know next time to hold my tongue.
