Violin lessons in Year 3 - do we really need to get a half-size violin?

My little 7.5 year old went into today very excited about her first violin lesson. She took my old violin - full size naturally. She has come all despondent because music teacher has said she will have to get a half size one which means shelling out ££50 for an instrument she may not take to.

I used that violin in the Juniors, as did my brother. Are the school being mean?

What age do they recommend starting violin? Also, does anyone have any comments about the Suzuki method?

I don't know anything driectly about Suzuki, but at least this will bump the thread.

At primary schools they generally start at about 7-8, I think. My ds started at 6 because he was already at a Saturday morning music school, and that's the age they recommended. I think the main thing about starting is to get a good teacher as technique is so important (holds for the bow and the violin) that it can be very hard to un-learn if you start off sloppily.

Oh, I second that recommendation for musicroom, I've used them lots and they're fab.

Oh no, not another mumsnet recommendation for a site for me to spend a fortune in! This is just what I've been looking for - we haven't got a music shop in our town, and the nearest one is pretty useless.

Has anyone used these books Theory made easy for little children - they look great.

I've got these already: Chester's flashcards - they are great fun, and really versatile.

I'm going to spend a fortune on this site, I just know

I started teaching ds2 some piano, he's having fun; but he's most interested in the theory. He already knows all the note values, understands simple time signatures, knows an octave of notes in C major scale, and loves writing his own tunes!

Sue, sometimes people just have an affinity for a particular instrument, or really don't click with an instrument they're doing - I had a piano pupil who I thought was a total dead loss musically, she took up singing lessons and bingo, she had found her niche!

Yorkiegirl, are you advising that 3 yo is the right age to start Suzuki?
