13+ Preparation at Junior School

Have you had a child in the junior school of one of the London boys' through schools and decided to move schools? My DS is in the junior school of a London boys' day school but he has recently been talking about wanting to board at 13. I know the school ensures they are ready for the 11+ but what additional preparation would a child need if, for example, they are looking to move from Westminster to Eton?
I would be grateful for any useful input. Thank you.

Eton pre-test at 11 for 13+ spaces. You then have to take CE in English, Maths, Science and French.

Westminster won’t be preparing their own candidates for CE though, as you don’t need it to go to Westminster.

If your school prepares for 11+ your son should be OK for the ISEB pre-test, but you might want to practice the online format with Bofa (?) or similar.Eton and other boarding schools have specific entrance tests for children from (state) schools that don't follow CE, or you could move ds, if he gets a conditional offer, to a prep school to prepare for CE for years 6 and 7 and maybe also get some (flexi) boarding experience.

Super weird question, given that in the current year 9 from westminster, over 20 boys got places at eton and every year about 8-10 go. The school will prepare them.

Even now that they are about to drop CE for westminster entrance, they have said that they will continue to support CE for a number of years for those who wish to move. Plus prep for The Challenge would cover sitting Eton scholarship, as an alternative

@Michaelahpurple Thank you. It is reassuring that a few boys move every year. It just that when you speak to the school, their plans give me the impression they expect the boys to stay until 18. I was worried he won't be prepared for outside tests because they are not expecting the boys to leave. I suppose most of these schools use similar tests at 11 and 13 and have similar curricula so every day teaching prepares the boys for every school's test.

Thank you all for taking you time to respond and for your advice.

Sorry - my answer was probably a bit choleric - Christmas cabin fever. WUS has always sent about 8-20 of their 42 odd original boys (oddly, the last few years one or two of the boys joining at 11+ have gone, which I think is rather naughty) and whilst I am sure they would prefer to keep most of them, the school has always acknowledged that it is hard to know at 7 where a big will ultimately go, and WUS is after all a prep school.

It may change eventually I suppose, once the no CE for Great School kicks in, but personally I doubt it. Equally, eton is over turn going to have to think about how it deals with CE I’d more schools join westminster, wellington etc. Currently I think they are highly opposed to dropping the requirement.

WUS boys will be well equipped in the core subjects and languages to take CE, however WUS adjust their curriculum. For the more rote-learning subjects, notably history and RS, if wus moves away from the rigid CE template over time I imagine the destination schools will adapt.

I guess st Paul’s boys going to eton have been in this position for a while, but some still go.

How it would work from other genuine through-schools (especially ones straying at 11+) I don’t know.
