I have just had Dd1 trying to explain it to me but i haven't the foggiest what she is on about.

She said say if i add 5 + 6 = 11, then i have to do 6 + 6 = 12. She said near doubles helps me remember that 11 is by 12.

I am confused and feeling very thick.

Justr came to type this and couldn't even remember what they were called so had to wake her up to ask her.

sis - that is how maths is taught these days - percentages are taught in a really easy way, so is long division, etc

A lot of it is based on simple techniques taught in KS1 - like doubling. Most of the maths these days is using what you know to help you work out what you don't know and it actually gives meaning to the maths work

sis · 29/09/2004 12:46

Popsycal, I think it is great - I find it sad that there is almost a culture of 'not being good with numbers' - I don't mean that as a criticism of anyone who finds numbers difficult - I am just sad that so many people don't 'get' basic maths.

Northerner · 29/09/2004 12:51

Kate - I didn't learn the 9 times table trick on my fingers. Any chance you could tell me?

popsycal · 29/09/2004 12:54

oooh i did a link to this trick - will try to find it for you

popsycal · 29/09/2004 12:55

skim through this thread...half way up!

krocket · 29/09/2004 13:15

I love finding out about these kind of tricks
Like the VAT one sis
Kate - what's the x9 table one on your fingers?
any others anyone? (i'm rubbish at maths and need all theh help I can get)

krocket · 29/09/2004 13:15

Doh , sorry didn't read your message pops

popsycal · 29/09/2004 13:16

krocket - click on my link for the tables one....

sis I taught becca how to do her VAT thing the other day doing the 10% then add half of that then add half of that thing - that is what i teach 10 year olds to do to work out percentages!

popsycal · 29/09/2004 13:16

lol

krocket · 29/09/2004 13:17

just looked at it - that's fab

krocket · 29/09/2004 13:18

as I have your attention pops
what is the easiest way to work out percentage (I really am thick).? Like 29% for e.g.?

bundle · 29/09/2004 13:19

i love that 11 x table thing - where you separate out the numbers eg 36 becomes 3 6 - to times by 11, you add them up - put the result in the middle and you get 396! (can't remember what you do if it adds up to more than 9 - can anyone else? )

popsycal · 29/09/2004 13:20

ok here we go...

popsycal · 29/09/2004 13:24

say you have a number 420 for eg

10% - move digits one place to the right ( decimals points do not move the numbers do) so 42.0
another 10% = 42 so 20% is 84........
that is the first part done......

the easiest way to find 9% (to add onto the 20%) is to get 10% and take 1% off.....
you know 10% is 42.0......to find 1% from 10%, move the digits ANOTEHR place to the left 42.0->4.2

so add
10% - 42
10% - 42
10% - 42
30%= 126 then take off 1%
126-4.2= 121.8

is that right? brain not functioningf!!!

the key things you need to learn are how to do 10% and 1% then all you need to know is how to double and add up to do the rest!

krocket · 29/09/2004 13:25

that's excellent - why was I never taught maths like that?

popsycal · 29/09/2004 13:27

long division lesson is next

krocket · 29/09/2004 13:29

but seriously is this a new thing? I mean teaching the basics in an accessible way? or did I just have crap teachers? Long division bleeuurggghhhhhh

popsycal · 29/09/2004 13:30

it is pretty new - i wasnt taught like this - i am 30

numeracy stragey came in around 5 years ago with a big emphasis on mental methods and non-formal written methods
great for the may kids who just dont get the standard methods...
krocket - I have a parents helpguide that i made for long division.......want a copy?

Northerner · 29/09/2004 13:30

Thanks Popsy. Being crap at maths myself I will use that one!!!

popsycal · 29/09/2004 13:31

or i can post them here.....got one for long multiplication too.....

popsycal · 29/09/2004 13:33

seriously though - if anyone would like the sheets for long multiplication and division then shout out and CAT me"

krocket · 29/09/2004 13:38
