Does anyone's DC play the chanter?

??

Ages?

Did they move onto the bagpipes? Do you 'need' a tutor at the chanter stage (I can play the flute and piano and read music etc)

Will I regret this forever? Ds having seen pipes played in Scotland wants a go, and I'm keen to encorage a wind instrument to help his asthma

I bought DS a chanter for Christmas last year. He is 12. I did buy it as a forerunner to bagpipes, because he said he'd like to learn. Now, bagpipes may sound painful, but I know lots of 16 and 17 year old boys who play, and they can make more for playing for 30 mins at a wedding or funeral than their peers can make in a whole weekend. So I was thinking ahead, hoping DS will keep me in my old age .

DS has not had lessons. He is musical, and has picked it up easily, but he also plays guitar, clarinet and piano. I can't afford any more lessons at the moment!

Many places (in Scotland, at least) have pipe bands where children can go and learn in the evening.

We have a piping centre nearby, so if you want me to go and get you a tutorial book or something, just let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for that. Ds is only 7 and we don't live in Scotland (dh is scotish). But we do have a pipe band nearby, so I will make enquiries
