HMB, Popsy, Pixiefish, and others - update on Y9 class

Hi guys

Just wanted to say thanks for your support and advice last week. I was pretty down as you know and getting myself really wound up with that Y9 "class from hell" - which, last week, was the best way to describe them and no exageration at all!

Anyway, listen to all the advice and suggestions. I had them again today.

I spoke to the LEA consultant guy that comes in to cover for the lack of Hod (well he does KS3 anyway) about the idea of a settler task, rather than a starter. Gave all my (or yours!) reasons and justifications. And he agreed, although felt he was a little sceptical. Popsy - I used your freenie typing tutor software. I made sure it was preloaded on screens before they came in ready to go. As half class have PE beforehand I knew they'd be late - infact up to 10 minutes at least in end. So I had them do that on entry and whilst I did register. Worked a treat They found it a really calming exercise and got them on the computers and doing soemthing constructive. Thanks

Rest of lesson I did the re-hashed, simpler (with lower expectations and easier work) - LEA guy had prepared a lot of this for me and another class (also very week) and we'd discussed it. The level was just right actually, and I got the extension task going for those that finished early. Did one to one (with LEA guy in too) with those struggling. Much much better. Hey, they even listened and got something done. Infact, EVERY pupil managed to do something and to meet the basic level of objective. Several even managed the objective for the extension psmile]

It wasn't perfect but better. Two pupils in particular are still very very disruptive - ncooperative, rude, etc. However I know one of these may well now be withdrawn from ALL Y9 classes to work independently in the Learning Support Unit. And the other is likely to follow. Both worked there last year too. These two do have an effect on another group of 5 or 6 lads near them - as I said, no room to move and split them further. If these go I suspect the others will settle way better and be half the hassle at least. Class is still fidgetty and chatty, but manageable.

I also found out that the who,le of Y9 is a school issue. This wasn't told to me last lesson when the deputy head came in, didn't get the attention and just left me to them. He kind of gave me the impression it was me . However spoke to the most senior assistant head today and this is not the case at all. My class in particular along with one other are to be very closely monitored. I did have to fill in some behaviour assessments for the two worst behaved pupils today as part of this - i was brutally honest. All of Y9 are being discussed at senior management level. And the LEA guy was fab and backed me up the whole way

So, overall a huge improvement. Still more to be done, but we are getting there. Fingers crossed....

Thanks so much for all your help, and for listening. I can smile again this Tuesday evening, and not just depressed drowning my sorrows in huge amounts of alcohol. LOL!!!

sorry Hula i missed this last week. it sounds you have put a hell of a lot of time, thought and prep into this session. how long was the sesssion?
glad it all paid off for you

Only a 50 minute class, but last week's lesson was the worst I have ever experienced in my teaching career of 8 years (or is it 9???) Felt lousy after it but a spell on MN helped me out no end - and Popsy has been fab getting me info and finding this great little software package. Just spend a lot of planning to try and avoid such a nightmare again. No doubt I have forgotton to do something in a different class as a result, but hey ho!

Thanks

Good luck for half term then, and enjoy the next few weeks. I remember going back but TBH once you've been there a day r two it's as if you've never been away. Not sure if that is good or bad though really!!!

Have to say most of my classes this year seem, so far, really good. My Y7 classes are currently very sweet and eager. I have a low low ability Y8 who are pretty lovely too - some of the lads try it on a bot, but nothing nasty or too bad. And my Y11 and Y10s are good too - so far. Just this Y9 to master.

If only eh?

Working in the prison each Thursday is going to be a novel break from the school classroom anyway - very different!

Make sure you go out somewhere and have a fab time - be busy so you can't dwell on it. Are you going back FT or PT?

SOunds a good plan

No baby yet - due next week. Although she did tell her Dp that she reckonss it will arrive Wednesday - which is tomorrow. Her older DD was early. She has been so poorly most of the pregnancy though and in and out of hospital a bit too. She looks great right now though and the baby has now turned. So, hopefully soon.

Close to station - just cross main road and walk through bus station I think. Maybe an easier way - Wedgiesmum will know though (will ask her) as she worked at the uni opposite station.

Done thread for Zoobys.

Hulababy- I'm glad everything went well for you. I've got a horrid year 10 class that I'm managing to handle but my jobsharer isn't. They've been a horrid bunch since year 7- I think every year has a crew like this. The sad thing is that in amongst them there's a lovely girl who's only doing 4 GCSE's because she suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Luckily she's come to sit next to me and knows that certain tasks aren't directed at her- ho hum. Anyway if I can give you one bit of advice Yorkiegirl it's to get everything ready the night before you go back- I know you will BUT it helped me psychologically as well. I spent the whole of the day before I went back in tears because dh started a barny- another story. I work 2 days and it's fine as I'm sure you'll be once you've been back 10 minutes.

Cheers pixiefish
