Reading practise w/3 year old

My 3 year old is beginning to take interest in letters! We practise a little every day, but I would like to very my methods a bit. We use traditional children's books but he is still not sturdy enough to read full words on his own and gets easily bored with the repetitiveness of the "easiest" books. We have tried reading eggs and teach my monster to read, but he (and I to be honest..) find the a bit tame. Do you have any recommendations on other learn-to-read apps I can try? Smile

I think at 3yrs you should just encourage a love of books. Read to them regularly, make sure they have lots of interesting books around them to look at even if it’s justfor the pictures, make it fun. Talk about the books and what’s in them to your dc. If you have time, regular trips to the local library, some libraries have special story times for tots.

This is what I did with both my dc and they could both read fluently by 5yrs.

I don’t know about special apps for that age to actually learn how to read but please be careful, if it starts becoming hard work you’llturn them off reading altogether.

Have you looked at the Usborne Phonic Readers? You could read them to dc, but stop at the last word and sound it out for him to "read".

If you do teach letters, use lower case and letter sounds rather than names. I tried also to put them in the context of words rather than just showing letters separately when teaching dd. You could try writing down a few CVC words for him, sounding them out as you go. Use ones where each letter makes a sound; so "cat" rather than "car".
