Set summer reading list

My American husband can not believe that my daughters school do not have a (year 8) summer reading list. We have explained they don't but he doesn't believe us. How can I prove that the list does not exist without embarrassing ourselves? Does your school set a reading list? Is it something we just don't do in the UK?
NB obviously my daughter will be doing her own reading over the summer, yes I'm really annoyed he 'doesn't believe' us.

I set one for Yr8 to read their first KS4 text with the expectation they won’t Blush and our library gives out a recommendation list but I’ve never worked anywhere with a mandatory one!

Ask him to phone the school and find out himself!!!

2 kids, 3 schools.

1 (a private school) set a summer reading list for incoming Year 7's that also had reccomendations for higher years. They were a variety of fiction & non fiction texts withthe idea the child picked and chose from them.

The other two schools (state) nothing. Dd loves reading ad occasionally her English teacher would reccomend someting to her personally.

No set lists but libraries have summer book challenges. U.K. holidays are a month shorter than the US remember !

  1. Does your DH often accuse you of lying? That's my concern from this, that he somehow doesn't trust you, which is not a good basis for a marriage.
  1. His problem. He can call or email the school and ask.

My daughter has just done GCSEs and is planning to do English literature (and History) A level. She will be doing plenty of reading over the holidays but does not have a reading list!

My DD's didn't have anything specific in the lower years, just the advice to read, anything, just read.

Post GCSE DD has an extremely long reading list of required and suggested. I would expect that in preparation for ALevels, but wouldn't have expected anything lower down the school.

I am very much of the opinion that holidays are for loafing about, relaxing and enjoying. Long summer holidays don't last forever, you might as well enjoy them while you are able (with a book in hand if you feel like it Wink)

@AliMonkey Agree with your first point. I find it hard. Back to counselling for us!

I grew up on the continent and used to get a list of recommended reading. It was optional, though.
