Moving to Bedford - which villages north of bedford if schooling in town

Hello
Moving to Bedford. Dd will be going to Pilgrims hopefully and I'm thinking of buying in one of the villages to the north. Any recommendations - looking at Clapham and further out towards Harold and Sharnbrook. Are these too far out to get her into school every day? Should I look nearer? I'm not too keen to move into the middle of Bedford but I could be wrong - I have heard of the Castle Quarter any thoughts on that would be welcome or on anything about where to buy in the area.
Thank you in advance

Hi OP,

Clapham, Sharnbrook and Oakley are very accessible for the school. Harrold would be a much longer drive - depends what/where your other commitments are?

Is there something in particular you're after from a village (ie facilities versus peace & quiet)?

I'd also recommend looking closer, such as Ravensden, Renhold, or Wilden? Renhold is particularly convenient for the bypass/A1/St Neots as alternative destinations (eating/shopping!!) and I know a few current parents living there.

Many school parents live in the Bromham/Biddenham area.

I don't live in Bedford myself,

Sorry, I didn't finish my thought!

I'm sure someone else can comment on the Castle Quarter; my only experience is when wanting to head to the river (the embankment area is lovely), the park (Russell Park is great) or restaurants/bars which are there. Again, not sure if your move is because you wish to have a more rural existence - the Castle Quarter is the polar opposite. For me, it's very similar - from a population density/parking/facilities/style of housing - to where I grew up around East London.

Agree with everything MustBe said, Clapham, Oakley, Sharnbrook all perfectly nice villages with various shops, pubs etc. Oakley probably my fav of those 3 as the prettiest, but it really depends what you're after, Clapham is the nearest to town and also probably the biggest, lots of new housing going up there. Harrold is perfectly nice in itself but further out, probably at least 30 mins drive in the morning to school (depending on traffic) as opposed to maybe 15-20 mins for the others? But you'll certainly get lots of Harpur Trust parents coming in from that kind of distance so you won't be alone. And if you don't mind being that far out, Lavendon and Turvey are also v nice?

As MustBe says, Biddenham and Bromham are probably the most popular 'villages' for Pilgrims/HT parents, I put that in commas because in my mind they aren't really distinct villages, they sort of run into the town and they have a bit of a generic-y, 'executive home' feel to them. But perfectly pleasant, very convenient for town (lots would commute to London from there) and plenty of choice of good quality housing particularly if you are after a more modern style house.

In terms of living in the town itself, the 'Castle Quarter' as the estate agents have taken to pretentiously calling the streets around Castle Road, is very nice, safe, lots of chi-chi fancy delis and cafes, very family friendly. Handy for town, your DD could walk to school and you have the parks, the embankment and restaurants/bars close by. But of course it is in the town itself so will have a different feel to the villages. Most of the housing around there is Victorian or 1930s era, which may or may not be your thing - either the grander streets around the embankment (many of which have been divided into flats or aren't residential any more) or the streets of terraces and semis further down Castle Road - lovely period houses but tend to have small gardens and no off-street parking, is that what you are after or do you more want the detached house with driveway and garage?

If you do want to live in the town itself you could also look at the streets around Bedford Park (I think the EAs refer to as 'Poet's Quarter') as that would be even closer to school, or Putnoe and Brickhill are fine although more modern style of housing and there are a few council estates there if that bothers you?

I'm from Bedford and grew up in the Castle Quarter, not that it was called that then and my mum and many friends still live there. In my opinion it's the nicest part of of town by a long way - because of the river and Russell Park. Both the castle quarter and Bedford Park have some beautiful Victorian houses - Bedford Park is lovely too but the area doesn't quite have the cafes etc that the castle road does. Better for the trains though.

Biddenham is nice but as someone said quite "executive homes". Very good for the station if you're using it. Sharnbrook and around is nice, Olney is very nice. If you definitely want to live in a village then Renhold is worth a look.

Bedford's a funny place, some bits are really very pretty and it has a better selection of restaurants, pubs and cafes than many comparable towns but it does have it's grim bits and can be a bit ropey on a Saturday night in town! I'm pretty positive about the place though and it has a great energy with various arts events and there is a lot happening round the new carnival in September

Thank you all so much for such uselful advice! I actually spent yesterday armed with your messages visiting all the places you described. Maxelly you were spot on about the difference between Oakley and Clapham.
MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet - I have yet to visit these , Ravensden, Renhold and Wilden will be doing so next Tuesday and your description matches advice I got from the E Agents yesterday.
I checked out the Castle Quarter and really liked it so I have a few areas to take into account now. I really like Bedford. I have lived all over London for years then lived in leafy Bucks it is a nice combination of the atmosphere of them both with good access to London and the river is an absolute jewel. I didn't know what to expect but I'm really looking forward to the move after my exploration. Thank you again so much for the advice it made a such a difference to my search. :)

While not serving Pilgrims, there is an HT bus through Lavendon/Harrold/Carlton/Felmersham/Milton Earnest to BMS/BS/BGS. Journey time without traffic from Sharnbrook/Harrold is about 15 minutes to the centre of Bedford but traffic is bad in the mornings around BMS so it could take you up to 40 minutes to get to Pilgrims.

BMS has made all manner of offers to the local council over the years to ease the traffic problems but they don't seem to be interested. The council is currently digging up the road to add a separate turn-left lane coming from the A6 to go up to BMS (and on to Pilgrims) which should help come the autumn term.

I also grew up in what is now Castle Quarter. Quite nice old Victorian houses- close in wasn't quite as nice as Bushmead Avenue area (huge townhouses) then shrinking to 3 bed terraces as you go further out. The terraces pretty well all had adequate sized double bedrooms rather than 2 + box, soundproofing way better than current 30s terrace.

Watch road layout for one way streets/potential rat runs. Top end of Denmark Street had 2 churches so disastrous parking on a Sunday morning.

Snoopy10 · 19/06/2019 19:39

Motleyii Thank you for your reply - that is very useful information about the bus service especially if we get somewhere in Milton Earnest which I'm looking at, along with Biddenham.
randomsabreuse that is great information about Bushmead and the tip on the road layout. I have been warned off Queen Street by estate agents too along with two other roads which I can't remember off hand.

That's interesting Motley. We wrote off BMS because of the traffic problems.

The villages like renhold, Wilden & ravensden have much less traffic for getting into town. They're a lot more
Rural too.

Motleyii · 25/06/2019 22:23

The HT schools are well catered for by privately arranged buses. I refer above to "BS04" which comes from Northampton. www.bedfordgirlsschool.co.uk/464/admissions/transport-and-travel/bus-services

Piggywaspushed · 25/06/2019 22:26

Not Clapham. Sprawling and ugly really. Harrold is nice. Turvey is nice.

Traffic in Bedford is awful by the way...largely caused by lack of full bypass and said HT schools!!

Piggywaspushed · 25/06/2019 22:28

I lived in Renhold. No community feel at all. Just one long road. Few children.

Piggywaspushed · 25/06/2019 22:32

Your comment about BMS is odd. Yes the traffic is awful. But it's the one on the edge of town. It can't be any easier to get to the other schools!
