Teachers! If a student missed 2/3rds of your classes by deliberate and cunning arrangement of music tuition would you wait a year to tell their parents what was going one?

DS(14)s school report has revealed this skulduggery.

Which subject has he been missing?

This used to drive me barmy. I always took it up with the HoY first. Although not upsetting the guitar teacher was apparently first priority

I'm the school hasn't raised the issue as it's one of the important subjects. Does his missing 2/3 of English lessons have any long-term consequences?

Is this one lesson per week or does he do more than one instrument? I'm surprised the school/English teacher hasn't picked this up. I would punish him by making him do pre or post school music lessons (if that is possible) next year.

No, this would have been picked up much quicker, I'm sure it would have been highlighted in the reports - as well as the full report once a year, there are interims twice a year, with columns for any concern, for example 'A' means absence is affecting this subject.

Has he been deliberately re-arranging lessons then? My children's music lessons are rotated so they miss different lessons, but I'm sure most teachers would jump up and down a bit if the child was often absent from their subject because of a music lesson. The only exception I know of is a girl who is the only one at the school to study that instrument, so she misses the same lesson each week. I don't think that subject teacher is thrilled about it, but there's nothing to be done because that's the only time the peripatetic teacher comes in.

Seems like your son has some explaining to do! Although I would query why it wasn't picked up sooner...

Two lessons a week- 2 instruments.
Long term consequences: Summer busking skills will be fantastic but in the winter when he is selling the Big Issue outside Tescos he will not be able to read it.
Short term consequences: I will kill him (when he gets back from residential old ladies hairdressing course for which he signed up in order to bunk off the last week of term).
