My dd has had her report on her recent reading assessment and supposedly she has a reading age of 9.8+ and a spelling age of 8.3.

Is any of this worth the paper it is written on? What do they base these tests on and how do they calculate the 'reading age'

Thanks

reading ages are only assessed up to 9.8, so that's why it's plus - it's not on teh scale

They have a series of standard tests (ie std words to spell & read) - based on what they get right, tables are used to equate a reading & spelling age of the 'average' pupil at that age ie the expected norm.

I don't think it can be right that they're only assessed up to 9.8. When my ds was 10 he was assessed as having a reading age of 15. Christ knows how they work it out. Do they give them a copy of Playboy or something?

DD3 15 is dyspraxic and was way behind with her reading in Primary school. But she has her reading assesed every year and at the last one it came out as 12.5 so they do assess past 9.8.
DD1 now 20 was a good reader and when she had her reading assesed at age 11 her reading age was 16. So I think that is when they stop.
